The Cult Spreads

03 Sep 2006 05:40 pm

Scroll down and you'll find Bill Simmons' thoughts on The Wire -- long story short, he, like everyone else, thinks it's great. If you haven't seen it yet, you really must. Kevin Carey at The Quick and the Ed (education policy blog) promises that he'll be doing Wire-blogging throughout Season 4 to comment on the show's presentation of inner-city school stuff. I think what the world really needs is for Mark Kleiman to start watching and blogging.

It is a shame that The Wire has never gotten the widespread acclaim that it deserves. I personally think the second season was the best, but that is really nitpicking. How The Wire remained in the shadows of The Soparanos is a shame (I gave up on The Sopranos after the third season I believe.)

Yea McNulty is excellent, but I am a Freamon fan myself. Of course...I cant forget Omar...yea Omar be Omar, and he be excellent.

Fans of The Wire should also check out HBO miniseries (that predates the Wire by several years) called The Corner. The Wire plays a lot of homage to the miniseries. We are currently going through the episodes of Homicide: Life on the Streets. Many of the characters from The Wire show up during episodes (along with alot of Oz alum). None of them will dissapoint the discriminating TV series palate.

Alonzo Mourning ?!?!?

I understand that all members of ethnic groups outside yours seem similar, (I couldn't tell the Greek players apart in FIBA), but Alonzo Mourning?

Funny, I've had HBO for aeons, but never managed to invest any time in getting hooked on The Wire. I remember seeing one or two episodes back in the day, and I recall thinking the show was good. Perhaps it was simple "HBO series addiction" aversion -- which, in my pre-TiVo days, was a legitimate concern.

Anyway, I'm fixing to buy season one on DVD.

I'm pretty sure the Alonzo Mourning reference was a joke, although it struck me as a dumb joke because there is no resemblence.

Anyway, I've watched Season 1 on DVD recently, and by coincidence everyone is now talking about The Wire, I guess for Season 4. From what I've seen, I'd say the crime family parts are as good or better than The Sopranos. The police parts are less good, though, as so many of the officers are incompetant and lazy. Counterbalanced by McNulty who is God's gift to the criminal justice system and the people of Baltimore.

The Wire is the bomb. They took down my man Stringer at the end of the last season. That was rough.

The Wire has wised up more than one fan to the powers of bit torrent. When you just gotta get a Wire Fix and it isn't on DVD or On Demand, my man bit torrent takes care of business. Yo?

With the wire stuck behind the HBO paywall many many college campuses will be hosting Wire torrents shortly after the initial broadcasts.

OK Matt you got to tell us which magazine pundits are closest to representing which characters on the show. I bet Andrew Sullivan has fantasies about having Omar's rep ine realms of political commentary. lol

Hey Matt you get a taste of the new Choklate album? They have a hot sound. Spin it up and post a review.

The intro to Waitn' - Feat Chali 2na is a good sample strangely appropriate with your recent moves.

Wire commentary yes indeed.

[Rant]It really pisses me off that in the itunes/podcast era, that cable providers and content producers has yet to allow "purchase" (viewing) of episodes on a per episode basis via On Demand services.

The Movie/TV/Music industries have gotten what they have deserved in terms of P2P downloading and piracy. IMO, they have lost more money on their idiocy of locking up and controlling content than they ever have through online piracy. The less options consumers have to purchase your wares, and the less convenient it is to play/view them, the less people will actually buy (while finding other ways to obtain the same material)[/Rant]

zAmboni: there's light at the end of that tunnel, thankfully. My understanding is that the episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" available on the iTunes store have been selling at a brisk pace, and they've only been lagging behind the cable airings by a few days.

Hollywood executives are dumb as paste about digital distribution, but they understand a six-figure check with their name on it as well as the next guy. Expect more of this in the future, not less.

The season 4 premeire is on HBO On Demand starting today... being the sick Wire-obsessed freaks that we are, the girlfriend and I watched it at midnight last night. Loved the opening scene, which was hilarious and quietly horrifying at the same time. Lots of new characters, and some of the major ones from previous seasons (like Daniels and McNulty) appear only fleetingly. They also have a new cinematographer, which is a loss, as the old one was amazing. Overall, quite a promising start.

My favorite line from the first three seasons:

'Fool, if wasn't for your friend Sergei here, you and your cuz both would be cadaverous motherfuckers.'

Excellent interview w/ Davis Simon here:
