What To Say About Iraq

17 Sep 2006 11:36 pm

Suzanne Nossel tries her hand at advice to progressive candidates. I think it's pretty good. Forthcoming in the Prospect I have a piece where we tried a bit of a gimmick -- instead of an article about what a candidate ought to say, just write out a speech a candidate ought to give. I'll provide a link when it's available.

Looking forward to it. As I recall, the last time you tried such a gimmick, your top-of-the-head effort had a certain professional, usually not lacking in self-confidence, positively green with envy. And suspiciously shortly thereafter, he left blogging and went scurrying to some Journal of Big Ideas.

You could point out that from the start of our invasion of Iraq to "Mission Accomplished" cost American "only" 137 lives and about $30 billion.

Each month we occupy Iraq cost an average of 62 American lives and $6-8 billion.

So, every 2-3 months occupying Iraq cost the same as one invasion of Iraq to topple the government.

If we pull out and can stay out for 3 months...even if we have to go back in, we're ahead on the deal.

Over 70% of the attacks in Iraq are directed at U.S. troops...we pull out, there is a chance the level of violence will drop considerably in Iraq.

Plus the Iraqi government gets a chance to see if it can stand up on its own.

Worth a try.
