Art Brut

18 Oct 2006 02:24 am

If Art Brut is coming to a town near you, I'd really suggest you check the show out. Their album is okay at best in my opinion, but the live performance is big-time fun. I've seen them twice now and certainly didn't regret a repeat appearance.

A suggestion in return:

Gringo Star will be playing at the Velvet Lounge on the 24th. They're from Atlanta. If you like an old-school garage band psychedelic sound, you'll love them. They put on a great show to boot. Very lively. They used to be A Fir-Ju Well (http://www.afirjuwell.com) but ditched the name. If you like yer bands with the usual, plus some accordian and kazoos mixed in, step right up.

The weird thing about Art Brut is that the folks involved are really talented, considering their schtick and all. And the irony, thought it overwhelms at times, is endearing. Emily Kane and Good Weekend (I saw her naked ... TWICE!) are rockin' songs, too.

You mean such as, say, tonight in Greenpoint?

We'll see whether MY's taste in entertainment is any good. Hopefully the crowd isn't filled with hipsters in sports jackets, but's that's probably asking too much.

I agree that Art Brut's album is good not great. For recent greatness, I would suggest the new Hold Steady, Yo La Tengo, Boy Kill Boy. For a flavor...Hold Steady sounds like an alternative Randy Newman, Boy Kill Boy is another in the seriew of bands who grew up listening to their older siblings' Echo and the Bunnymen records, and Yo La Tengo is, well Yo La Tengo.

While good-not-great is a pretty apt description, I must say that "Modern Art makes me want to rock out!" is the greatest lyric of 2006.

Kind of like the Rock Kills Kid album (which is also very, very good)...

you say "ok at best" now, but you'll come around.

word is there'll be plenty of new stuff tonight in greenpoint... stoked!

Indeed. I saw them in Chicago last week and Eddie Argos has enough charsima to float a small presidential campaign. Also Yo La Tengo is much excellence live.

I saw the Hold Steady last night and they were awesome.

I'm old. The newest band I like is Brazilian Girls. Good beat. You can dance to it. Or could if you weren't arthritic and didn't have floppy parts.

this is the best band in the world.
