Way Too Hot

Spencer determined to take things too far, is sitting around the house modeling his stylish Palestine High School windbreaker. In real life, though, I think he went to Bronx Science just like Marty Peretz.

In other news, our house is very cold since the heat is broken and the relevant repairpersons refused to come before tomorrow.

Matt,
Not sure how cold it is in D.C., but if the heat stays off run a drip of warm water from a couple of faucets overnight to keep the pipes from bursting. You probably knew that already, right?

It'll stay above freezing, so that's not necessary, right?

In the winter of 76-77, the cold was so severe and prolonged that we eventually had 48 inches of frost. Normal is around 3 or 4. Pipes froze up from mid-January until the first week of March. Thousands of old rental units around town became uninhabitable and the search for really good friends who could put you up for a few days at a time, as if you were a maiden aunt come to live with relations on a rotating basis -- the visits not the relations -- was intense.

Oh my god! Forty-eight inches of frost! You mean snow and ice, right?

"It'll stay above freezing, so that's not necessary, right?"

Yeah, you're fine.

Coleman makes a propane space heater that you can run indoors. At least, as my heat still isn't on in Salt Lake City, I've been running mine indoors. They call it the "SportCat" or something. I bought mine at Wal-Mart.

Is that a Mac laptop there? Those things could heat a gymnasium!

It's not really cold until you guys start blogging from within sleeping bags.

Cuddle with your clones.

I kept warm for a month last winter with one of those little space heaters -- they work pretty well if you buy the right one. Look on the bright side, you'll be slightly decreasing your personal level of CO2 emissions for the evening.

Cuddle with your clones.

No - slit your clones open, then sleep inside their still-steaming guts.

And I thought they smelled bad on the outside!

Ole Spencer doesn't look too happy. I wonder if it because he has to wear that Palestine HS windbreaker in the house or the fact his picture was taken while wearing the aforementioned windbreaker in the house. It's a great reason to go to a nice warm bar and get fall down, sloppy drunk...then you won't care that you have no heat in the house, you'll just want it to stop spinning.

Um, why would you wear a high school jacket after you've graduated from high school?

um, because it's AWESOME?

What I want to know is what kind of DIY hack is that pair of bulging silver buttons where Steve Jobs demands only one belongs.

I can tell Bronx Science is a damned fine school, but they may want to focus less on advancing "the self" and more on educating "the self" in the sciences.

Seriously, someone should tell us if we need to drip the faucets tonight.

we're all going to freeze to death.

more beer!

When I lived in Italy the heat could only be turned on after the tenants had voted to set a date -- we had a warm fall, so they voted for a late date, and then it turned real cold and they were stuck -- actually, we were too.

As resident foreigners we had more sense than to vote ourselves.

Am I the only one to get the "Palestine" joke?

I can tell you that the jacket originated in Palestine, Texas. Go Cats!

Move to San Diego. It's in the 70s here.

And the blondes on the beach will inspire you to write better. That is if you feel the need to, despite the blondes.

In case it's not obvious, no, you don't need to run faucets to keep pipes from freezing unless you expect temperatures in the house to drop below freezing. It's that water-expands-when-it-freezes thing that you're supposed to be watching out for. No freezing, no problem.

"Move to San Diego. It's in the 70s here."

Don't y'all move back to Texas. We got people right in this house probably live with 50 miles of Palestine and couldn't tell ya what direction it's in. Round here summer, I think.

At least he didn't wear a Stuyvesant jacket.

Groovy, baby!

Did Marty fire him because he went to Palestine?

Spencer's a lock for the lead if they revive Leave It To Beaver.

So did everyone survive the elements? I see Yglesias is posting up a storm, so he made it through ok. Did we lose anyone last night? LOL... :-P

I've lived less than half a mile away from Bronx Science, just around the northwest corner of the reservoir on Sedgwick Ave., for long enough that I probably ran into young Spencer at the local pizza joint or on the street, never realizing that the little delinquent would ever amount to anything.

You got it, champ! No freezing of water outside, no danger of freezing pipes. Stick with the common sense, it will take you far. Takes quite a bit to freeze the pipes, more like zero degrees Fahrenheit for quite a few hours, perhaps a little higher if the plumbing is outside decent insulation.

Crikey, what is this thread anyways? Almost strikes me as a parody on some freeper site about clueless elite wimpy latte liberals who wouldn't be able to make it past day zero on "Survivor" auditions.

I can't believe you have had your heat turned on to begin with! We have the same weather in New York and I haven't fired the furnace up yet, the house is 72 degrees right now, gets down to like 65 at night, when I might turn a space heater on at my desk because of drafts along the floor. Why do you need the heat on with 50 degree temps outside in the daytime? Have you forgotten to close the windows or do you have big holes in the wall? I just can't figure it out. Perhaps you're in one of those southern shacks without any insulation at all? Or is it that 60 at night is too cold for Blogohouse? I believe that NYC rent law allows landlords to turn it down to something like that at night....I get the distinct impression heating is included in your rent or you'd all have windbreakers on the last few weeks....

"Mom"

That is perfect - lessons on how to be tough from some person with the handle 'artappraiser.'
Wasn't Bloghouse one of those reality shows on PBS that never caught on?
