All Alone

06 Nov 2006 10:02 am

I've traditionally done my on-leave work from Mocha Hut on U between 13th and 14th, which is an excellent spot but whose WiFi service is a bit unreliable. They had an outage this morning, so I took the opportunity to check out 14U, which opened last week just south of the intersection of 14th and U. The sign outside advertises "great ambiance" and certainly the funky furniture is pretty cool and certainly a step up ambiance-wise from the rather steril Hut. On the other hand, the place has -- as of right now at least -- absolutely no customers besides me, which is a bit of a problem ambiance-wise.

but certainly the yglesias stamp of approval should help rectify that.

Sounds like somebody needs an entourage.

It would be a great place to go because nobody goes there but nobody goes there because nobody goes there.

I'm guessing Matt has an entourage/posse/courtiers, but he can't afford, yet, to free them during business hours from their desk-bound servitudes.

Two more people showed up! We now have three customers and two employees.

Let the good times roll!

I'll probably be by later...

That's a funny post.

Solitude is better for you know, work.

more than enough for a game of Euchre

I actually think that's untrue. White noise is better for work, and humans are good at providing that.

A creative friend here in Detroit says the best place to hang is a failing coffee house. Hope yours was just undiscovered till now.

I am pretty sure that flash mobs evolved from beginnings such as these.

A little unrealistic, aren't you Matt? I would think the conformity crowd would be in their regular office jobs at 10:00 - and that's a mite bit early for the non-conformity crowd to be up and about after a busy weekend, isn't it?

What's the crowd hanging out at the Mocha Hut at 10am on a Monday morning like?

Shockingly large. When I first started chilling there, I expected it to be dead empty weekday mornings, but it's usually about a third full. There are a lot of slackers in this neighborhood, apparently. 14 & U is, as of now, just myself and senior Sanchez.

I agree. This is why I don't do my "working from home" actually "from home." In a quiet place (empty coffee shop, my house) the noises you do hear are very distracting. White noise, as generated by lots of people in a coffee shop, is easy to tune out and you get work done.

"senior Sanchez" -- are you calling Julian old? or is that Julian's father?

I've been passing 14U on my way home from work everyday and keep meaning to poke my head in, but doesn't that sign outside actually have "great ambiance" in scare quotes, just like that? Somebody's been reading a little too much Stepp, maybe.

Do you actually enjoy being around other people? Man, that's just sick.

I used to think that coffee shop white noise made for a good work environment, but every joint I go to is really pretty loud, and they seem to intentionally design the acoustics so that there's a harsh echo. The coffee shops in my neighborhood have a lot of people studying from fat law or medical texts, which astonishes me. They have better mind control than I do. Or maybe it's just age.

So I guess the quality of the coffee doesn't even register on the radar? I awould assume for a coffee shop, having decent coffee might be more important than a comfy chair. I realize in this case I'm assuming incorrectly, but I'd like to live in a world that makes sense.

I understand the Harbucks wireless service is quite reliable (wink).
