Bakruptcy "Reform" Reform

12 Nov 2006 03:30 pm

Mark Kleiman says he hopes to see it from the new congress. I hope so, too, but I'm not super-optimistic. As you'll recall, the new Democratic majorities are quite narrow and plenty of Democrats -- including soon-to-be majority leader Steny Hoyer -- voted for the bakruptcy bill. A whole bloc of centrist Democrats even wound up demanding an apology from Nancy Pelosi for turning that into a whipped issue.

It's going to be fascinating to see what the Democrats decide to push for in the next couple of years. Especially since the second year is a presidential election year.

For example, will the Democrats do anything about global warming? Can they try to ratify Kyoto?
McCain has a bill, doesn't he? It could be "bipartisan".

Matthew earlier indicated that the Democrats' domestic agenda would be limited (heck, of the 7 items in the Chait article to which Matthew linked, I support 4, maybe 5, of them...).

Jack Murtha has no shot at the Majority Leader spot?
