Neither/Nor

Alcee Hastings drops out of the race for Intel Committee Chair, while Pelosi is still said to be very unlikely to pick Jane Harman. Sounds like a win-win to me. And, frankly, good for Hastings who seems to me to be doing the right thing here rather than allowing questions about him to cloud the broader question.

Yes, if the question becomes "Harman instead of somebody else," rather than "Harman instead of Hastings," it will become a lot easier for the casual observer to notice that Harman is not exactly a paragon of congressional virtue.

Sweet! Let's hope we can get our rocket scientist. Or, failing that, Silvestre.

Er.. Hastings statement makes it VERY clear that it was NOT
His decision to drop out of the contention for HPSCI Chair--
rather, Pelosi informed him that he would not be appointed.

Alcee Hastings did not drop out of the competition, but was dropped and is angry about being dropped. Is there a candidate who has been critical of the way in which intelligence was used to take us to Iraq?

A great candidate would be Shiela Jackson Lee, She is a smart, tough lady, would have no problem holding the administration's feet to the fire and should get the backing of the CBC.

Can we keep speculation on this topic to actual members of the Intelligence Committee?

Jane Harman--California--(Yea on 2002 Iraq War Resoultion)
Alcee L. Hastings--Florida--(Nay)
Silvestre Reyes--Texas--(Nay)
Leonard L. Boswell--Iowa--(Yea)
Robert E. (Bud) Cramer, Jr--Alabama--(Yea)
Anna G. Eshoo--California--(Nay)
Rush D. Holt--New Jersey--(Nay)
C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger--Maryland--(Not in Congress in 2002)
John Tierney--Massachusetts--(Nay)

Rockefeller's already been made chairman, but just for kicks, here's the Senate Intelligence Committee membership for '07-'08:

Jay Rockefeller--(Yea)
Carl Levin--(Nay)
Dianne Feinstein--(Yea)
Ron Wyden--(Nay)
Evan Bayh--(Yea)
Barbara Mikulski--(Nay)
Russ Feingold--(Nay)
Sheldon Whitehouse--(Says he would have voted Nay had he been in Congress at the time)

Best line by Congressional Rep this year:

Sorry, haters, God is not finished with me yet.
--Alcee Hastings

Fucking awesome.

Er.. God may decide to show Alcee that that statement can be taken two different ways.

Uh how, no one is investigating him right now.
