Tyler Cowen spells out his reading of Apocalypto in some more detail, seeing it as a series of deliberate parallels to the story of Christ designed to say something about Christianity versus Islam. It's an interesting reading, and makes me want to go see the film again.

Mel Gibson is very talented, despite real flaws. I remember my impression of "Braveheart", before Gibson was ever exposed as an anti-Semite, was that the movie was fascistic. It's nevertheless one of my favorite movies. The scenes of violent combat, particularly the one where Wallace returns to the village for revenge, are some of the most thrilling I've ever experienced in the movies. The crucifixion scene, on the other hand, doesn't work for me -- aside from not being viscerally convincing, what's supposed to be Christ-like about an avenger?
Hasn't Gibson specifically said that the bad guys represent Bush and the Neocons?
After seeing the film, I had two reactions--
1. I would bet Mel Gibson has a lot of disturbing and dark emotions in his soul with his anti-semitic tirade only the most well known part of what lurks underneath his public facade.
2. He is a mad genius at filmmaking.
I can see Gibson becoming the Roman Polanski of our age at least as regards the combination of creative genius and to say the least 'questionable' character...
I'd be interested in seeing it for intellectual reasons, but unfortunately that would mean giving my hard-earned money to that nutjob anti-semite Mel, so I'll have to wait until I can watch it for free on cable...
