Hibachi On!

18 Dec 2006 09:20 am

Normally, I don't advise blowing leads in the fourth quarter, but it let Agent Zero score sixty points. Can we get the man some All-Star votes now? I note for consistency's sake that 60 points on 32 FGA and 27 FTA is not just scoring, it's efficient scoring.

i went to bed with six minutes left and the wiz up six. the lead had been slowly slipping away, and needless to say i was little worried. gil at that point had already been amazing, but the 16 points in overtime must have been a sight.

Woo! I was this close to going to bed after the third quarter.

Didn't the Wizards build up their lead again near the tail end of the 4th quarter though?

I changed the channel - I think - with the Lakers down double digits with 2 or 3 minutes to go.

They managed to organize a stunning late-game collapse that, had the Lakers won the game, would have left me in tears. LA implemented a very aggressive trapping defense that forced some turnovers at the cost of generating tons of fouls. The Wizards proceeded to become uncharacteristically inept from the charity stripe while LA hit a ton of three pointers. Brian Cook, in particular, nailed a very unlikely-looking shot at some crucial moment.

"Brian Cook, in particular, nailed a very unlikely-looking shot"

I caught the 4 quarter and OT.

Gilberto's defense on Cook on that play was perfect, but Cook nailed a very difficult shot.

But if he's really interested in outballoting Wade or AI, I'd advise him to drop 60 a couple more times in the next month. Otherwise, it ain't happening.

I'm a realist, I'd settle for outpolling the artist formerly known as Air Canada.

I confess, when I saw this score, my first thought was "But what will Matt say about his efficiency?" After all, it's entirely possible that Wally Szcerbiak would have won it in regulation.

Air Canada is still cruising on that one dunk contest ('99?) that ranks up there with McGwire's (likely steroid-fueled) Home Run Derby display as one the great athletic spectacles of the last 10 years. (Not to mention performing what is, I dare say, the Greatest Dunk of All Time in the 2000 Olympics).

To be clear, though, Arenas definitely deserves the spot.

Dude, check it out. 32 FGA + 27 FTA equals (using Hollinger's .44 * FTA formula) approximately 43.88 "true" shot attempts, for a TS% of 68, which is freaking fantastic.

Air Swamp has pretty good numbers this year - three less ppg than Arenas but better FG% than Arenas - so I'd say they were pretty close. In fact, VC's numbers were probably better than Arenas's before the last two awful games (before the weekend, Vince was shooting close to 50% from the field). But, qualitatively speaking, Vince hasn't played well at all this season - he usually dominates 4th quarters, but this year he's been crap in the 4th quarter. I can't evaluate Gilbert qualitatively - maybe he hasn't been good either, despite the numbers, I dunno - but I'd vote Gilbert over Vince.

(To be fair, Vince has had all kinds of personal problems this year - ugly divorce and all that. But as some Nets official said - you got to suck that stuff up for the 4 hours a day NBA players work and do your job.)

Yes, well, my thesis was that this would be an impressive performance regardless of how the efficiency numbers turned out!

"for a TS% of 68, which is freaking fantastic."

Kobe had a TS% of 79 last night.

In fact, if one wanted to say that Gilbert had a better game than Kobe last night, one would have to discount efficiency.

What I loved about Gilbert's line was the 3 TO's. Along with his two steals, that means he only gave away 1 net possession while popping in 60 and 8 assists.

Dude's got an ongoing free throw psychosis, though.

Point: Steve. For the Wally reference.

Oh yeah, and silly Yglesias, small sample size...

15 games for Melo
10 for JR and Robinson
6 for Mardy Collins
4 for Jeffries
Jerome James and Nene 1 apiece for leaving the bench.

I call bullshit on the 15 for Melo and the 10 for JR. Robinson should get at least as many as Melo.

And nothing for Zeke? ("I'm telling you, I wouldn't go in the lane right now...") Who the hell do you think you are, John Cheney? Once a punk always a punk.

Kobe had a TS% of 79 last night

Radmanovic had a TS% of 84!

Maybe the defenses were just not very good? Crazy idea for a game where 288 points were scored, I know.

I agree with Pooh that Robinson should have been suspended for more games than Carmelo. I don't really see why--absent evidence of something more than an instruction for a hard foul--Isiah should be in the conversation at all. Or why Bootsy should get six games for what was, at most, a two game foul. Does what he did compare in any way to the McHale clothesline? How much outrage was there about that, during the golden age of the NBA?

The bloodthirsty reign of David Stern must be overthrown!

Obviously 'Melo got more games because he, you know, punched someone. (And a sucker punch at that.) Robinson I don't believe connected with any punches.

Robinson I don't believe connected with any punches.

My recollection of the rule is that "connected" is not relevant. Also, Robinson is irritating as fuck, and should have been banned for the year for the trick dunk attempt.

In actuality, I'm not arguing for a regicidal revolution, but British authority is held by Queen-in-Parliament. NBA authority should be held by the Commish-in-NBA Labor Hall.

And if he won't go along with progress, then, and only then, will deposing the dictator be the lone way forward. (And remember, the key to any coup is to take and hold the broadcast facilities.)

I don't really see why--absent evidence of something more than an instruction for a hard foul--Isiah should be in the conversation at all.

Have you not seen the video from about 30 seconds prior to the incident, where Isiah can be seen clearly saying (to Melo) something along the lines of "I wouldn't got in the lane right now, it won't be pretty." Coincidence?

Re: Nate, the whole thing would have been just a big scrum (probably flagrant 2 on Collins, maybe Smith gets tossed as well) if Robinson hadn't jumped in JR, Melo, and everyone else's faces and started shadow boxing/throwing punches (watch the video again, before he and JR go tumbling you can see him clearly throw 2-3 punches.)

He did 'Melo a solid. Melo ought to send him a fruit basket.

Now that we have a 'Melo thread, let me go back to the original topic of this thread - Agent Zero's game.

Saw this quote from Kobe:

First of all, he shot 27 free throws. We as a team shot 30. Think about that. But him individually, it's funny, he doesn't really seem to have that much of a conscience. I really don't think he does. Some of the shots that he took tonight, you miss those, they're just terrible shots, awful shots. You make them and they're unbelievable shots.

Ivan Carter (of WaPo) notes the irony here, but, really, I don't think the word "irony" quite covers it: "Kobe questioning another player's shot-selection and, conscience? Wow."

Have you not seen the video from about 30 seconds prior to the incident, where Isiah can be seen clearly saying (to Melo) something along the lines of "I wouldn't got in the lane right now, it won't be pretty." Coincidence?

Right. But I assume he meant that a hard foul would be coming. Good. If ever there is an appropriate time for a hard foul, a winning player showboating at the end of a blowout is it. Are you saying that hard message fouls have no place in the game? League history is against you. Hell, I think you'd have seen a hard foul in college.
