Merry Christmas!

25 Dec 2006 12:26 am

I'll be celebrating with Ackerman in Chinatown watching The Good Shepherd and eating fried noodles, but I'd like to wish a merry Christmas to all the goyim of the world. Meanwhile, the Christmas Eve seen at the Black Cat was disappointingly lively -- nothing like the deadness of last December for some reason. What's more, their jukebox no longer features "Fairytale of New York" which sort of ruined the whole thing.

On a more substantive note, wouldn't complaints about Iranian interference in Iraq be more credible were the country not currently occupied by 130,000 or so American soldiers? I mean, if Iran conquered Canada, I assume we'd try and put some agents in place on the ground.

Despite the Pogues being one of my favorite bands, I think the No Use For a Name cover of "Fairytale" is better than the original. The female part in the cover is really energetic.

goyim??? isn't that somewhat a pejorative term?

More to the point, Isn't it insensitive to the the billions of goyim "of the world" who are non-Christian?

I kid I kid. Have fun at the movies :o)

Meh, at least we don't call or think of outsiders as The Hellbound.

Somewhere there is a videotape of me and some friends - about age fifteen - drunkenly lip synching "Fairytale of New York:" and as I recall me at least partially disrobing.

The hairy mischling wishes everyone a happy Christmas.

Wouldn't Iranian interference in Iraq be more credible if the government hadn't invited them there, and then asked the Americans to release them after they were taken into custody? The article claims three-way tension between, the US, Iraq, and Iran, but I don't recall any examples of tension between the latter two being metnioned. This story reminds me of when it was reported that Iran was arming Sunni insurgents against the Iraqi government, i.e., possibly a product of US defense propaganda, or at least spun heavily by them, rather than an honest bit of news.

If I've got it straight, aren't we trying to replace al-Sadr, who is a thug but an Iraqi thug, in the government with al-Hakim, who is closely tied to Iran?

I couldn't agree with Neil more! And if you haven't heard it, click on my URL, yo. I think the female vocals are from the lead singer of Tilt, but I could be wrong.

I think we're trying to set up al-Sadr, who has done everything we've asked him to do recently, simply because he's an easy to identify target.

Sure beats trying to kill the Sunni phantoms that plague our occupation of Iraq...

a) Our invasions are benign; other people's invasions are malign. To oppose our invasion forces for any reason is to be on the side of evil.

b) The important thing to keep in mind here is that we need to invade Iran.

d) The flimsier the excuse for invading Iran, the better. Arbitrary, unjustified invasions more clearly demonstrate our Steely Resolve. The world bends to our will and all opposition melts away. History proves that this always works.

I think "goyim" and "Christians" is coextensive. Never heard a Muslim referred to as a goy.

Happy Christmas to me and Happy Holiday with short lines at public establishments to you!

Perhaps I shouldn't argue Hebrew with Mr. Yglesias who may well know it better than I do, but goyim means nations, i.e., everybody who isn't a Jew.

And I recall Ariel Sharon's comment about a refugee camp massacre, "Goyim kill goyim and everybody blames the Jews," referring to a situation that fairly clearly involved non-Christian Palestinians.

As far as I could make out it was two accredited Iranian diplomats and their bodyguards. If I was an Iranian diplomat in Baghdad, I would want bodyguards who were prepared to die for me. So what if they were members of the IRG.

stopped by the cat around 9:45, still not open. ended up at saint-ex, which was exactly what saint-ex should be when the suburban collar-poppers aren't out in force: just enough folks to fill the bar, convivial, old time big band new orleans jazz playing, and a distinct sense that our next mission for the RAF would be over el-Arish...

that was menachim began, not ariel sharon, about the goyim killing goyim. i think matt is expressing an ashkenazi bias. in any case, though biblically the term goyim is clearly directed at non-christians, i wonder if the term remains in currency among jews from morocco, yemen or iraq?

I liked "The Good Shephard" (given the topic and theme, it'd have to be truly awful for me not to like it), but I'm afraid it has at least one gaping huge plot hole -- but you'll get no spoilers from me.

Hey, "Neocon Notochord" -- hilarious. That's a great alias you've chosen! May the New Year bring our glorious and cost-free triumph in Tehran and Damascus!

The female part in the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" was sung by the late, though nonetheless immortal, Kirsty MacColl, who was run down while diving by some Mexican moneybags in his powerboat. I wouldn't say it lacks for energy.

On the Merry Christmas theme, living here in Taiwan where it's already over while most of Christendom is just gearing up, I just want to say thanks to the Jews for getting me through this horrible holiday blogging lull.

(Matt and Spencer,of course)

No Use for a Name's cover of "Fairytale of New York" is a pale imitation of the original. The male lead singer's voice-and the woman's, too, come to think of it-is pretty bland. When they exchange insluting verses, they lack any sense of anger. It didn't sound like they were even singing to/at each other. And, except for the faint tin-whistle at the end, the song is stripped of any Irishness.
