From an Unlikely Source

I read Free Darko every day, and readers know I enjoy a good NBA stats debate, but the two don't usually come together. Today, however, SilverBird5000 has a fascinating essay about The Wages of Wins and the political economy of scoring.

Hey, Matt- Glad you liked the post. I actually had the idea after reading something you wrote several months back about an LA Times article on the payroll/wins disjunction in baseball. So a belated thanks for the inspiration.

I'll just note, off-topic, how immensely entertaining the Jazz/'zards MLK day game was.

For the first 44 minutes, I was pretty confident that Utah was going to win. The 'zards were having extreme trouble matching up against them, and I figured Utah would slice them up late.

But then I remembered that this year, when Gilbert is on, the 'zards win...

Guess yesterday's game wasn't part of Matthew's season package. What a shame!

dberri is a huckster.

"dberri is a huckster."

As with any Ann Coulter-esque figure like Berri, it's always an interesting parlor game to try to guess the proportional weight between true-believer idiocy and calculating cynicism.

Given the particular intellectual games Berri is playing, my guess would lean toward calculating cynicism.

As was Lakers-Heat. I hate the Lakers, and hateHateHATE Kobe, but even I was getting pissed about the differential between how the refs treated him and Wade. The Lakers have the makings of a nice team - Bynum looks like a keeper.

Terrorist.

but even I was getting pissed about the differential between how the refs treated him and Wade.

It is obscene. But at least the differential didn't cost the Lakers an NBA championship.

The Lakers have the makings of a nice team - Bynum looks like a keeper.

What I love best? Apparently Bynum was pushed by Jim Buss over the objections of the GM and scouting staff. J. Buss apparently once said that any bar drunk who watched the NBA regularly could draft as well as an NBA front office.

Boy, the Lakers could be nasty once they get Odom and Kwame back. In a best-of-seven series, I think they can hold their own with anyone in the West.

Kwame

Seriously, get help.

I'd say, "See you in the playoffs," but sooner or later Denver and the Clips are going to make their move, so probably not. You can't teach quick feet, especially not at that size.

I don't get the Bynum love. Sure the guy has some talent. The NBA history books are littered with guys who had talent. When Bynum actually shows up every day and gives consistent production for the Lakers (BTW - how long is his contract?), I'll say it is a good pick. But not until then.

And I chose the Memphis/Phoenix game to watch.....D'oh!

I had the League Pass last year. I don't this year and the tipping point was how terribly dissappointing the Finals were because of Wade's preferential treatment. It's ugly. I can't stand watching the Heat despite Wade's greatness because of the amount of crappy calls he's the beneficiary of. I've never seen a less deserving champion than last year's Heat.

Very generically, for all the statistical analysis methods popping up on the NBA, I'll just take most NBA coaches word (and my eyes) for it that a particular player is best suited to play 14 minutes a game for his team rather than 38 becuase somebody's weighting biased method has singled him out for greatness.

How can I take "the NBA history books are littered with guys who had talent" seriously when it comes from someone who doesn't know how long rookie contracts are for?

Hey, at least Al is recognizing the potential lessons of history. In non-sports topics, this in itself would be cause for celebration.

Pooh:

I think both you and shoals fail to reckon with the hideous blackness of Al Republican "soul." Could he not have been suggesting that once Bynum had confirmed his value, he would be either a restricted or unrestricted free agent? Is his aside not really the same as asking you how long your business trip will be after having run down your new girlfriend?

Could he not have been suggesting that once Bynum had confirmed his value, he would be either a restricted or unrestricted free agent?

Indeed this IS what I was suggesting!

Obviously this shows my black, black soul.

Well, jeez, shoals. That ain't the only information necessary. You have to know when Bynum was a rookie, how long a rookie contract was that year, AND whether Bynum has re-upped. Obviously the 30 seconds it would have taken me to gather that information was not worth the effort.
