Everybody Hates Chris!

06 Feb 2007 11:52 pm

Hillary Clinton's doing somewhat better than I would have expected in this New Hampshire poll but the real shocker is Chris Dodd's absolutely miserable 22-20 favorable-unfavorable split. Several people in the poll have higher unfavorable ratings, but they're all much more famous than Dodd who's unknown to most respondents. How is that everyone's gotten such a negative view of Connecticut's other Senator? I think the idea of him running for president is pretty bizarre, but I can't imagine working myself into a frenzy of Dodd-hatred.

He's Irish. That's enough for me.

"How is that everyone's gotten such a negative view of Connecticut's other Senator?"

Creepy Phil Donohue looking motherfucker. Bushy eyebrows and seemingly albino. How could anyone not hate him? He looks like he eats babies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

C'mon--everybody? Hell, not even half the people who know who he is hate him.

America simply won't brook a candidate who's had crabs. Didn't you ever take any political science courses?

They blame him for Lieberman?

Dodd also just finished dead last, I believe, in the latest DKos straw poll, despite being Feingold's sidekick on the "this non-binding resolution is a bunch of pants" train. Dead last behind Joe Biden. And Mike Gravel.

Tom - the crabs story appears to be entirely fraudulent, since Chris Dodd apparently doesn't have a son.

The initial Wonkette post was incorrect to say "son", the orginal story said "brother".

Dood is Sen. Kennedy's old drinking partner, right? That's what he's famous for in NH, which receives Mass. TV signals. Just a theory.

Dennis Kucinich also beat Hillary Clinton in the Daily Kos poll, which might not be the best indicator of how the primaries will go in all respects.

My best guess is that people are annoyed that he's running when he has no chance in hell of winning. He's like Orrin Hatch in 2000, a senator who is going to bother us with his presence in the race merely because he has a big ego and thinks it's his right to be involved because he's been a senator for a long time.

I basically agree with Dimmy. Judging from the reaction of my family who still live in Connecticut, people there pretty much think he's delusional for running. If the voters in his home state are that unenthusiastic about him, it doesn't bode well for his candidacy.

Personally, I assume I'll have unfavorable feelings toward any member of the U.S. Congress, so if I'd never heard of the guy, I'd say "unfavorable." Maybe there are more like me.

I thought that was what Joe Biden was for...

Jon Stewart had a funny clip of Dodd saying in a speech he was going to "finish the job Harry Truman started in 1948" and then pretending that a united Korea was Dodd's main campaign platform.

Looking at the link, Tom Vilsack is at 7 fav/18 unfav, which strikes me as even worse. Vilsack's from Iowa -- how have 18% of NH residents even heard of him enough to dislike him? At least Dodd is from New England.

It's Lieberman. "Connecticut Democrat" just brings up negative connotations.

What is surprising about the poll is Hillary's favorable/unfavorable ratings among Dems(74 fav/15 unfav (+59)

Conventional wisdom among bloggers is that she is unpopular with the Dem base. It doesn't look like it in this poll.

Another surprise is the Gore favorable/unfavorable numbers(
63 fav/27 unfav (+37)I thought he would be a lot more popular with the Dem base given his 2000 stolen election martyr status.

Still, I suspect Gore would be a formidable candidate for the nomination if he ran.
