Payton Manning," is that like "Democrat Party"?
I didn't think of it that way, but now that I do, it's funny. Only if spelling it that way annoys him.
So. . .Manning totally saw the ball on the ground and made no effort to try and fall on it.
what an absolute pussy
Peyton ... with an E!
I don't think I can live in a world where Peyton Manning wins the Super Bowl.
And you wonder why we lose the red states...
Go Colts!
Shuler and Manning. Go Big Orange!
So Freddie, how you going out?
Peyton Manning = World Champion
My sources tell me that the Patriots are still the best team in the NFL.
After the Colts beat my Patriots, my football season was over. But I did check in from time to time tonight when the going was particularly slow on CSPAN. Fortuantely, I was watching the game in the 4th Quarter when Rex Grossman threw the very worst pass in Super Bowl hstory. So when my grandkids ask me some day, "Grandpa, did you see The Pass?" I can say, "Yessir kids, I saw the whole thing live! And the replays you watch on your nano-bio-video devices can't do justice to how breathtaking it was!"
Drinking myself to death.
Freddie's dead.
108-105, in Phoenix, without Carlos Boozer.
Oh, were we talking about something else?
Possibly the worst QB performance in a Super Bowl ever.
and that wasn't expected? look at any game projection and you will see that grossman is the epitome of BUM. for plenty of reasons i picked the colts to win. the worst was grossman, and er-lack-er (rhymes with linebacker) didn't help much. peyton didn't play superbly, but he won the biggest game.
best superbowl in recent memory, mainly because turnovers were so prevalent, and that made it a better game for the common fan.
roethlisberger should wear some padding off the field.
Best halftime show ever. I love Prince.
"Best halftime show ever. I love Prince."
I almost watched the Superbowl just to catch Prince.
The man brings in the funk and he brings in the noise.
George Clinton must be rolling over in his grave.
"108-105, in Phoenix, without Carlos Boozer."
Mehmet-mania.
Why do you hate Manning? He's a great player, and by all accounts a great guy. We need more people like Manning in professional sports.
And he played a great game last night, didn't he? : D
I don't know why MY hates on 'Payton', but as far as I am concerned that phony MVP trophy he got at the end of a game the Colts won because they RAN the ball down Chicago's throat is a perfect example of why I loathe the entire media creation that is the 'Payton' persona.
George Clinton must be rolling over in his grave.
???
Possibly the worst QB performance in a Super Bowl ever.
Pretty much every performance on this list (which doesn't even include Neil O'Donnell!) was clearly worse than Grossman's. 20-28, 1 TD, 2 INT? Certainly not historically bad.
The stat sheet doesn't tell the whole story, by any stretch. I've watched about the last eighteen Super Bowls, and I've never seen a more wretched performnce. That isn't to say that it was unexpected, at all, but he definitely lived up to his well-deserved lousy reputation.
His 20-28 ratio is highly misleading because the Bears were two scores down on their last two possessions and the Colts were conceding anything within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. The only touchdown he threw was itself a rather ill-advised short pass that should have at least been batted down, and his two interceptions were of the back-breaking variety when the game was on the line. That doesn't even count the numerous times that he threw terrible passes downfield that really should have been picked but weren't. And the above commenter was absolutely correct in saying that his second interception was quite possibly the worst single pass in Super Bowl history.
From his ads and all the interviews with him I've ever seen, Peyton Manning comes off as unassuming (even self-deprecating), charming, and funny. He works hard to be the best. Before yesterday, he faced a lifetime of tough losses in big games that made people worldwide question him.
I can't see why anyone would single him out to hate.
On the MVP thing, Peyton won only because they couldn't figure out which Colts RB to give it to. If this had been last year, when Edgerrin James was their go-to RB, and Edge had racked up say 75% to 80% of those yards, Edge woulda been the MVP.
"George Clinton must be rolling over in his grave."
Blasphemy! George Clinton is still very much alive. In fact he's still touring; the Mothership made a landing in DC this past New Years Eve.
20-28, 1 TD, 2 INT? Certainly not historically bad.
Perfect example of how stats have limited value in games other than baseball. Almost every ball Grossman threw was off-target, including a least half of the ones that were caught. His receivers were wide open most of the time, and if he'd been able to lead them instead of throwing behind them or at their knees, a lot of the 5-yard passes he did complete would have been 15-yard gains or more. Besides which, the 2 INTs doesn't count the two fumbled snaps, plus the sack he took by tripping over his own feet that killed a drive and forced them to punt. Tony Dungy obviously thought Grossman was terrible: he was kicking off to the up men as far out as the 40-yard line just to stay away from Devin Hester. When does that ever happen?
Maybe not the worst ever, but the only ones on that list that were definitively worse happened like 30 years ago, mainly because the more recent examples that I buy happened against much better defenses than the Colts' (for example, the Ravens and Tampa Bay). The Colts defense played okay yesterday (and the Bears' pass protection was poor), but nowhere near as well as Grossman made them look. The Bears were able to run the ball pretty well and get their receivers open all over the place even though the Colts knew Grossman could never stretch the field on them. So what does that leave to account for their complete failure on offense?
I can't see why anyone would single him out to hate.
Did you not see his petulant, whiny behaviour towards coaches and players throughout the Super Bowl? A game in which it was clear that the Offensive coordinator was right to run the ball and keep running it. He was crying and yelling and pouting while the Colts were clearly dominating the game. That is not, no matter what these insane media/sportswriter types try to tell you, leadership.
Oto,
Exactly. Sex Cannon was historically bad. All you had to do was watch the game to see that.
Actually, that's the biggest difference between Peyton Manning of this year and yesteryear: He's been much more willing to take what he can get through the air or on the ground, as opposed to the pass-all-the-time, quick-strike offense that he used to run.
Remember, he has total control of that offense. He can audible into anything he wants, given the formation. But this year he's actually been audibling into run plays, which is a marked improvement. -
Sometimes I wonder if we're watching the same game...
Sure Peyton was unhappy when they were left in a few long 3rd downs and failed to convert or there was a penalty against the offense. But I watched the whole broadcast, and I saw very little of this alleged whining and I read it as frustration w/ a failed offensive series. As Craigo points out, Manning is very much the one dictating when they run the ball. And all those dump-offs to Addai for 5-10 yards? Who do you think is making that decision? He showed a lot of maturity in knowing how to beat the Bears on a rainy day in Miami. Ironically, this was Grossman's greatest weakness this year: forcing bad passes downfield.
And Grossman was bad, but that 2nd INT being the worst ever? That was a long pass downfield on a rainy day. There are maybe 5 or 6 QBs in the NFL that can complete that pass consistently when its that rainy out. And not giving him credit for that TD reception? He threaded that ball into a very tight spot- the reason it wasn't deflected by the defense was the placement and the velocity. Rex has the basic ability to play QB- the ability to throw the ball accurately and strongly- not as good as the best QBs in the NFL, but its there. But he makes poor decisions and is error-prone. And those are qualities that can really hurt when its raining and your team is down.
Obviously it's bizarre to suggest that Grossman's second interception is a contender for worst ever. If anything, it's the first interception that would be in that category. The second interception, frankly, was virtually indistinguishable from Peyton's INT in the first quarter, and far more defensible in terms of game situation/desperation level.
As Craigo points out, Manning is very much the one dictating when they run the ball.
I wonder why the Colts even bother paying an offensive coordinator?
Even if George Clinton was dead, I don't think Prince would make him roll in his grave, on the standard understading of that phrase. I.e., I think Clinton digs Prince.
