Like Me, But Not Real

Tyler Cowen dubs Dr. Neruda's Cure for Evil by Rafael Yglesias "The Best Novel By A Father of A Major Blogger," and also notes his mother's novels. Under the circumstances, I can hardly let the fiction and non-fiction books of my grandfather, José Yglesias, go unmentioned. Particularly noteworthy from a blog-centric point of view is Tristan and the Hispanics whose title character is a fictionalized version of the major blogger in question.

You're the protagonist of a novel, depicted as a stuffed shirt straight man? Wow!

so why doesn't anyone mention your other talented relative, that hott singer Julio?

I mean, feliz navidad, babeee!

And while Fearless is The Best Screenplay By A Father of A Major Blogger, I'd say Death and the Maiden is The Best Movie Made From a Screenplay By A Father of A Major Blogger by a narrow margin over Fearless.

(Trying to keep up with the Jonzes.) My son shows up as a character in an adventure style video game.

And ...

My wife's so frightened by plane crashes that she won't let Fearless in the house. Good movie, though.

Matt, were you the inspiration for the character Luke in Only Children? I've wondered that since I began reading your blog. I'm a big fan of the father-of-a-major-blogger's novels, FWIW.

Hey, your grandfather's book depicts "inane folderol". My kind of book! (Actually, it could be interesting to me, as my wife's grandparents are Cubans in Tampa... and indeed her grandfather drives a 25 year old Volvo!)

The title character is Tristan GranadosYale? Wouldn't that be your brother?

Also Gramma Helen.

I hadn't made the connection, Matt. I've been a big fan of Yglesias, senior, ever since he was the most quick-witted kid in high school. No wonder you can write.

Tristran can't be Matt--Tristan went to (shudder) Yale.

No way. Somebody left a copy of Tristan and the Hispanics on a southwest airlines jet, which I found and read on a flight from Dallas to Harlingen. I was able to locate the owner from information left inside the book. Apparently she was reading it for a college-level class. I can't remember her name but I think the college was in the Rio Grande Valley or maybe El Paso. man, strange.

And this book is not for sale constantly on the sidebar of this web, together with the matthewyglesias.com t-shirts and mugs?

Do the T-shirts and mugs have this photo on them?

But I think MY should offer both variants. Thank you for the reminder of MY-as-pawn.

Maybe Tristan is Bizzaro Matthew - went to Yale, clean shaven, able to spell...

The book was first published in the 1980s, so perhaps the character was based on his prediction of what Matt would grow up to be like.

Matt could save himself a lot of trouble if he configured his software to post "My family is famous and rich" every 30 days or so.

Kudos on your dad being on the WGA negotiating committee. I should have realized that you're the son of a union man.

Please tell your daddy that Dark Water is a much underrated masterpiece, I really love this movie. Also it is part of a welcome trend to make Jennifer Connelly movies that don't suck.
