To be sure, it was in a quasi-meaningless game, but I'd sure like to know what was up with Tim Duncan getting a second technical foul (and thus kicked out of the game) for what looked for all the world to be no greater crime than simply laughing while sitting on the bench. Consider that Duncan's reputation consists of equal parts boringess and good citizenship, it seems especially bizarre that he of all superstars would be treated in this manner. At this point in NBA history, the Spurs have become tedious, but they surely don't deserve to be losing the big rivalry games in this manner.

Nobody calls Joey Crawford a nappy headed ho.
"I'd sure like to know what was up with Tim Duncan getting a second technical foul"
He understands the Powder Blues are coming his way, and he's getting scared.
Well, back in the good old days my trip to the Oakland Coliseum to watch Earl the Pearl Monroe was somewhat frustrated as Earl got two T's about ten minutes into the game. Seemed to think Charles Dudley wasn't entitled to draw a charge on one of the Pearl's spin moves.
However, I was sitting close enough to hear what he said, and, while the blogger ethics panel would object if I quoted it, I'd have to say he got his money's worth, even if I didn't.
Yahoo Sports:NBA devoted almost the entire game recap to Crawford/Duncan. The last game the Spurs lost, at Indiana, Crawford gave Duncan a technical. Heck, I will just link it.
I watched the game but missed the incident. I wouldn't say the Spurs woulda won with Duncan, but I have a bias.
And it was a hot San Antonio, but the Mavs have been coming back in the late 4th quarter and winning games all season. Having seen it so often I was expecting it, and so it went. A typical game, I don't even worry down 6 with three minutes to go. The Mavs win those games.
They rarely lead the whole game, and are usually down in the first half, then turn the defense up a notch when needed.
The playoffs may be different.
I watched the game, and it was a ludicrous call. So, in this case, yes, Duncan got a raw deal. However, I have to say that whereas I understand the knock on Duncan as boring, I don't understand his rep as a good sportsman. In the playoffs last year, it seemed that every time he missed a shot, he complained that a foul should have been called, and every time a foul was called on him, he reacted as if the very idea were preposterous. I could see where these kind of antics could get old pretty quick, especially from the refs' point of view.
This isn't football, where the guys wear helmets and the action is 50 yards away. A whole lot of people know exactly what really happened. Still, I doubt anyone will dig deeper.
Frank Lloyd Wright -- I agree 100%. Duncan is amazing, but he is one of the biggest whiners in the NBA. He is only able to keep it under wraps because of his otherwise nice guy demeanor.
Njori -- what's up with the cryptic comment?
mcmanus - Yahoo NBA has the exact same AP recap, I believe, but MY should avoid linking to ESPN - their popups are out of control and they don't deserve extra traffic.
"The loss -- only the second in the Spurs' past 14 games -- locks them into the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. They have only themselves to blame, going without a field goal the last 6:32, missing nine straight shots, and not scoring any points over the last 4:17. Duncan was lost late in the third quarter after getting two technical fouls 1:16 apart, the second coming from the bench." ...AP
Duncan-Crawford whatever. Dampier was DNP, and D Harris hit some key shots, but like I said, this is typical Mavericks 4th quarter defense. I have seen it all year. Ginobili and Parker and Finley should be able to at least score a couple points without Duncan. I know Terry & Howard & Harris would w/o Dirk.
Crawford did the Spurs a favor with the distracting story. They can blame the refs if they meet Dallas in the playoffs.
crawford is a wierd dude. he is same idiot that fouled duncan out of game 3 of mavs/spurs series last year.
but was funny to see the mavs act like they had just won the superbowl on some shit.
At this point in NBA history, the Spurs have become tedious...
Oh, absolutely. Nothing's more boring than a well-coached team of players who can run with the Suns, grind with the Pistons, all the while playing the best defense in the league. Oh, and the way they're always good and always seem to find good players to fill vacancies, which indicates not only great coaching but also a great GM? Borrrrrrinnnnng! Nothing is more tiring than versatility, truly.
And while I'm at it... what's up with Steve Nash passing all the time? And what's with all his running up and down the court? It's tiresome. And if I have to see Nowitzki take another fall-away rainbow jumper I think I'll go into a narcoleptic coma. And don't even get me started on the Nuggets...
If Rasheed Wallace whined as much as Tim Duncan, he'd have about 100 technicals this year.
maybe the way Bowen earlier tried to bait Howard into shoving him, resulting in Crawford T-ing up Bowen instead, was the prelude.
I'm pretty sure the NBA has the worst officiating of any major sport. How terrible of a ref do you have to be to not be able to ref in the NBA? Apparently repeatedly asking a world class player if he wants to fight is acceptable behavior.
"Njori -- what's up with the cryptic comment?"
It was kind of garbled, wasn't it. It was late.
I was just pointing out that a whole lot of people were close enough to the action to clearly hear what was said between Crawford and Duncan. It would be easy enough for reporters to find out what really happened. They won't though.
Oh, that was a real basketball game? I thought it was the beginning of "Forget Paris" - that movie where Billy Crystal plays an NBA referee who loses his shit during a game and T's people up for nothing, and the league realizes he's got issues...

The ESPN site was my final push to install Firefox.
"I'm pretty sure the NBA has the worst officiating of any major sport."
That has to be the NFL.
Ziggy, I'm closer to believing that you're correct in light of Crawford's recent suspension.

I applaud Joey Crawford for trying to get a rise out of Duncan and almost kind of succeeding. File that away as the mildest double-T/ejection I've ever seen. Someone get Duncan whatever McCain's on.
Crawford's always been this way. For some reason, he thinks people pay admission to see his lumpy bald ass. He and Dick Bavetta should go on tour; they'd sell out at least a dozen nursing homes if they worked out a decent Full Monty routine.
Oops. I just ejected in my mouth a little.
