Sweet Victory

29 Apr 2007 06:38 pm

I managed to see the end of Chicago's game four win over Miami before boarding my plane in Albuquerque. Now I'm actually on a layover in Midway Airport still savoring the loathesome Heat's defeat. This probably just ends up with the Bulls losing to the Pistons in Round 2, but Chicago's a young team with a bright future, so good for them. But more to the point, bad for Miami, which isn't going to be getting any younger.

It's tough to count the Bulls out yet, even though this is the playoffs, they were 3-1 against Detroit in the regular season (including 2 wins over Detroit in their last 10 games, including an 18 pt thrashing at Auburn Hills).

While I agree that the Pistons will present a far more difficult hurdle for the Bulls than the Heat, I expect the series to be hard-fought, close and very entertaining.

The main reason for my posting is a small sub-plot to this final Bulls-Heat game which, in a larger context, really doesn't get the attention that it deserves. I'm referring to Shaq's free-throw shooting, which was even more atrocious than usual.

I'm not suggesting that the Heat would have won had Shaq made ONE of his seven attempts, but frankly, I find it laughable that he is considered by many to be the best center in NBA history.

I know, I know, Wilt was also a bad free-throw shooter. But that's a perfect segue to my main point: at least Wilt had the guts – and class – to attempt to improve his percentage by shooting Rick Barry style (i.e. underhand). Shaq, in stark contrast, has always been so worried about his image, that rather than try a technique which could have helped his teams win, he refused to do so because (in essence) it wouldn't have looked "cool".

This issue sprang immediately to mind when the ABC announcer said during today's game that Shaq has so much "pride". Really? Is that so? Well, not doing something to help your team win because it will draw attention to a profound weakness and generate some (ignorant) laughter is not, in my view, something to be proud of.

Finally, I'm not disputing Shaq's overall value, or his many talents, but let's not pretend that he has been a "great" all-around player. Free-throw shooting is obviously a very important part of the game, and he is not only one of the all-time worst at that particular skill, but he has, throughout his career, placed his personal vanity above the good of his team.

I wanted to throw up after the Laker game. I still feel nauseated.

I wonder if Petey still thinks that Dallas will "obviously" win the series with GS.

How the hell are you guys getting these comments posted?

A good question!

Ugh. Miami was horrible. The wheels came off the bus and SuperDwayne was nowhere to be found. The Heat lost just about every aspect of every game in the series. It was a pitiful effort.

It was good to see PJ Brown and Alanzo Mourning back on the same court.

Charlie Ward should've volunteered to let PJ bodyslam him again, for old times' sake.

Bulls-Pistons is going to be a fantastic series.

And with Nocioni and Sheed, it could be really entertaining.

I think it's Davis's beard. Outrageous.

I still wonder if Petey thinks Isiah Thomas is secretly a genius.

I wanted to throw up after the Laker game.

No doubt.

what happened to the comments that did not make it through?

That was karmic backlash for your rooting for the Raptors merely because I was right about something that you thought you had called me on.
