Remember the "war czar" fiasco? Steve Benen points out that appoint a czar is actually the Bush administration's approach to everything. We've had a food safety czar, a cybersecurity czar, an AIDS czar, a bird-flu czar, and that's not even an exhaustive list.

It seems the country needs a "czar czar" to keep everything straight--my nominees are Czar Czar Binks and Czar Czar Gabor.
(I totally stole that joke from another blog thread on the same topic, but I can't for the life of me remember exactly where it was. So thank you, nameless-poster-whom-I-have-just-plagiarized, and, sorry, it was too good a joke not to re-use.)
Karl Marx was exactly right. Reagan was the tragedy, and Bush is the farce.
Hey, if your boss is a czar, do you call yourself a cossack?
Czars have been around in American government for a long time. For example, President Ford appointed economist Alfred Kahn as (anti-)inflation czar, William Bennett was appointed as (anti-)drug czar, etc.
This led me some time ago to define "Czar" as the official position in the US goverment with the least power.
It's just a displacement of Bush's (or Cheney's?) clear desire to be Tsar of the United States, as opposed to a boring old President subject to checks and balances.
I knew Nancy Pelosi was a Bolshevik.
at least the US doesn't have a "fun czar" yet.
I think what this administration needs is an Accountability Czar. His role would be responsible for all the bad stuff, leaving the rest of the administration free to misgovern in peace, while the Accountability Czar explains and apologizes for all the mistakes, and answers all the supoenas.
I would nominate Karl Rove for the job, as he has intimate knowledge of most of the stuff needing investigating.
you're forgetting "the czar of the telestrator"
I think the problem is the word "Czar." This process would work much better if the jobs were called instead Shogun, Kaiser, Big Brother, Generalissimo, War Lord, Fuhrer, Shah, Mikado, Grand Vizier, the Ayatollah of Rock-n-Rollah, or anything, just as long as it wasn't the hackneyed Czar again.
The Bush admin appoints Czars purely for PR purposes.
None of them ever do anything and if they do make recommendations, nothing gets implemented.
Condi was appointed "Iraq Reconstruction" Czar on two different occasions (about a year and a half apart). As far as I know Rove is still "in charge" of Katrina reconstruction and coordination.
War Nerd for War Czar. At least that crazy bastard knows his shit.
And how about "Remember personal info Czar"? Because you damn sure need one.
