Harsh

06 May 2007 01:53 pm

Discussing Spiderman 3 I described myself as "usually a relatively harsh judge of films" to which Scott Lemieux replied, "dude, you like Michael Bay movies."

That seems to the point, and actually explains my Spiderman-related perplexity. Introspecting a bit, I think I'm harsher than most movie fans on highbrow indie stuff and also on Hollywood comedies, but also much, much, much more forgiving of summer popcorn movies.

I.e., (you allege) You judge movies by what they purport themselves to provide, not what some (snob) thinks they "should" provide.

Don't break your arm, film meta-snob. :)

Way to be, Matt. Only parvenu snobs and strange people who call themselves "cineastes" turn up their noses to summer popcorn. Movies like 'Spiderman' provide reliable entertainment and occasional art; in my experience most hard indie stuff provides occasional art and reliably sparse entertainment. Soft-indie flicks ('Eternal Sunshine...') and big-budge Hollywood middlebrow ('The Departed') probably have the best batting averages of all.

Hmm, strangely, you seem to have the movie tastes of a adolescent male. Oh, wait....

Let me just submit, for the record, how much I dislike the recent offerings of one Clint Eastwood.

A lot.

And LeBron demonstrate why Nowitzki doesn't deserve MVP.

You have different yardsticks for different types of entertainment. This is normal. My literature professor neighbor thinks the Sopranos is hopelessly overrated yet regularly watches -- and enjoys -- Friends reruns. I can't explain that either.

So why am I reading this?

I adore well-made summer popcorn movies, which is precisely why I detest Michael Bay.
