Hot Fuzz

If you haven't seen it, go. Some punk investigative reporter said it was disappointing, in which case he needs to learn a thing or two about expectations-management; it's great fun, probably not as good as Shaun of the Dead, was but certainly not in a way that made me wish I'd just stayed home and watched Shaun on DVD or anything.

Have you seen Spaced? You should.

Oops. Italics tag.

It's no small feat to create a movie that can be simultaneously enjoyed by those who both loathe & love Michael Bay movies.("Punch. That. Shit.")

I guess I'm a punk because I was disappointed as well. I just happen to think comedies should have, you know, funny jokes. This movie had surprisingly few. And the whole spoof of action movies fell flat because it was basically one way too long twenty-minute joke that didn't really mesh well with the rest of the movie, which could barely be classified as a comedy at all.

I concur with Antid Oto. Everyone should see "Spaced."

Besides being plain old funny, it is instructiveas to how many funny things can be in a comedy without all of them being "jokes." Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (and, in Spaced, Jessica Stevenson) did fine by the verbal jokes but packed it to the rafters with hilarious visual and cinematic things.

Kicky.

I really enjoyed Hot Fuzz, not so much in a way where it's better, in fact I think I liked Shaun a bit more. But in a way where I hope that they keep on making that style of movie, because I want a whole collection of them.

There wasn't that many ha ha jokes in Shaun either, although to be honest, nothing made me laugh out loud as much as the "Don't Stop Me Now" sequence in Shaun. On the other hand, when the DVD comes out and I watch it a few times, I might think that Hot Fuzz is better.

No matter. They make very entertaining and interesting movies, and I wish them the best. (They've stored quite a bit of culture karma IMO with Shaun anyway)

the "Don't Stop Me Now" sequence in Shaun

--Who put that on?!

--It's on random.

Are you all blind??

That was a great movie!!! I even thought it was better than Shaun!

The almost homosexual moments, the villainous Dalton, the stupid reasons why they killed everyone, the poking fun at the peaceful countryside communities with low crime rates (but high accident rate), spoofs, it was all well done.

You all must be too old.

Diego

Note to everyone who sees it a second time (and if you're not a punk, you'll want another turn 'round Sandford): be sure to look at the book Sgt. Turner is reading. Mucho Geek Points for that touch.

Adam: on at least two occaisions Sgt. Turner (played by the awesome Bill Bailey - of Black Books fame is reading books by that author, and I'm told there's a third reference to him lurking in the movie somehwere...

and yes, Hot Fuzz is better than Shaun. It's probably better than a lot of things.

Yes, I understand Spack's criticism, but throwing Spaced into the mix definitely raises expectations. Pegg, Wright and Frost had to balance out two distinct audiences on either side of the pond, and I think they managed it pretty damn well, because there were enough jokes that only anglophiles or British expats would find funny in an American audience.
