Fred Thompson throws his hat in the ring. Well, sort of. There's an interesting issue about the status of the speech act consisting of an announcement that an announcement of a presidential campaign will be forthcoming. Is announcing the announcement equivalent to announcing?

Isn't there a special legal status to being an official candidate? If so, then the difference could be that he is announcing that he'll become an official candidate at X time.
Anyway, to this:
Organizers say the red pickup truck that was a hallmark of Thompson's first Senate race will begin showing up in Iowa and New Hampshire as an emblem of what they consider his folksy, populist appeal.
I think we should say "The rental company saved it for him?"
Here's another sort of off topic statement: what if he's the nominee, or at the very least a strong contender for a while, and NBC and TNT are not allowed to show episodes where he's on "Law & Order," which deals with the problem of too many episodes being placed, which increases ratings for the original next season?
On a more political note, not that I care one way, but his wife is twenty-five years his junior. I seem to recall one of the biggest complaints during the scandal with Monica Lewinsky was that she was so much younger than President Clinton. It's interesting that many of the Republican presidential candidates has a supposedly major personality flaw in some way attributed to Clinton; it'll be more interesting to see how the Republicans deal with this, should someone point it out to them.
I've often wondered the same thing about lavaliering v. engagement.
Ah good. Now we get to see how well Fred Thompson Actual Candidate performs instead of just Fred Thompson Candidate Who Isn't Really Running. I suspect as more Republican primary voters find out who Thompson is, they'll warm up to him as much as they have to Brownback and McCain.
I liked Fred Thompson best when he discovered that doing the right thing in the Senate campaign financing hearings he ran left him looking like a dope. So, he just canned the hearings. He hadn't understood that what he was supposed to do was run a propaganda hearing in conjunction with the Arkansas Project. He was just like Clevinger from Catch 22 who naively wants to tell Scheiskopf what's wrong.
In the Republican primary system, the voters are represented by four separate yet equally incompetent candidates...

Uh, I'm pretty sure the biggest complaint was that Monica wasn't his wife. I really don't recall the age thing to be that big a deal.
When Thompson was out of the race, he was everything to all Republicans because he didn't have to be anything. He was simply Plan B. It will be fun watching Republicans become disappointed when they realize Thompson is just as below average as all the other GOP candidates.
"...and NBC and TNT are not allowed to show episodes where he's on "Law & Order,"
My recollection from the California Recall, and what could and couldn't be shown of Arnold's movies (and 'Different Strokes' reruns), is that cable channels can do and show whatever they want, but NBC would be precluded from showing episodes of 'Law and Order' if Thompson were in them. So I think you have it half-right.
(Now, could there be a distiction made for TNT between new episodes and reruns? That didn't come up during the recall, so I couldn't say. But I doubt it. I'm pretty sure TNT can show whatever they want.)
Paging Adam Schiff!
Congressman Adam Schiff, D-CA, we have an exciting opportunity for you...
And it was definitely considered unseemly that Monica was so young. Heck, I bet you can find Fred saying it.
This seems like a good test of the nascent liberal message machine. I mean, if we can't use the pickup truck to make Fred Thompson look like a big ol' phony, we clearly have a lot of work to do.
I couldn't vote for Thompson. He has a weak record on immigration.

The Politico article is making a news story out of the fact that Thompson will be hosting a party on the Fourth of July weekend, the theme of which will be himself.
I know you can't go wrong by underestimating people, but still, I find it hard to believe this will get far. A red pickup truck he drives the last half-mile to a campaign stop? This reminds me of the candidate in "The Dead Zone," without actually being dangerous in any way.
Please, please let the Republicans nominate Fred Thompson. He combines Reagan's work ethic, with W's depth and Nixon's looks. Even if he does not win, watching Rudy Guiliani have to debate his faux doppelganger will be worth the price of admission by itself.
It reminds me of the pre-engagement on Arrested Development: "Will you one day intend to marry me?"

So it's Rudy McThompney now? Yawn, I am already bored of Thompson.
