The idea that John Edwards' 2008-vintage lefty political persona "carries risks" strikes me as pretty odd. To be sure, the stands he's taken carry some level of risk in a general election, but to run in a general election you need win a primary first. And in primary terms, Edwards' move to the left has been all upside -- it was and is the only strategy by which he could possibly win.

If thoughtfulness and substance in campaigning mean anything, then John Edwards is easily the most honest and boldest and best candidate; and Edwards will never generate the negative feelings Hilary Clinton does, while Barack Obama simply does not seem capable of talking policy specifics on any policy. I'll vote for any Democrat, but Edwards is my choice for now.
Granted, Johnny "bitchen populist" is merely "uncomfortable" with fags (as opposed to Roosevelt and Truman who believed that these faggy types should be given a gun and shown the door to the next room) but that should be vintage enough to win him his home state of North Carolina, or no?

I'd consider the source (Shrum).
Linus, your comment is hateful in the extreme and vicious unconscionable lying beyond simple hatefulness. What a horrid worm you must be.
Vile horrid prejudiced worm!
I know. I'm a hater and a big worm type.
Surely it can't be the case that Bob Shrum is a crappy consultant (although apparently not so crappy at getting himself hired despite being a crappy consultant) and also be telling the truth about certain people including Mr. Edwards.
I believe him.
And if he did say it and I think less of him for saying it does it make me a better or worse person? I can't tell.
Linus, I doubt you'll find many people who takes Shrum's word on anything. It's not merely that he's a crappy consultant, it's that he's a very conservative Democrat. Conservative Democrats tend to be dishonest Democrats.
"Linus, I doubt you'll find many people who takes Shrum's word on anything."
I don't know. Maybe you're right. Can't say I've ever met the man and all I know about him (aside from the fact that he seems to have been on the losing side of a bunch of elections) is that he's apparently quite secretive.
And I don't have any special animosity toward Professor Edwards either (which is another way of saying I don't trust politicians generally but the real monsters tend to be in the first tier; anyone who can actually become president is probably capable of doing terrible things, and is liable to do at least one genuinely terrible thing while in office...the 2nd and 3rd rungs tend to be reserved for the tragically principaled [who are occasionally blessed] but more often weirdos and assholes...being half mountain person myself I'll give Edwards the benefit of the doubt and assume he is more weirdo than asshole [which may be partially confirmed by the fact that he picked Strangelove as his favorite movie...I used to complain about pols having really middlebrow tastes but after Edwards said that I realized that having your politicians like such a good and subversive movie kind of ruins it]).
But I can't help thinking that Edwards' fans have to tell themselves this never happened in order to continue to
feel good about the man.
And I still think it happened.
Conservative Democrats tend to be dishonest Democrats.
If he had made that story up out of whole cloth, Edwards would have denied it.
Linus, you are a miserable wretch only concerned with spreading prejudice, hatred and character destruction. You are a lying worm and worse, far worse.
Keep repeating your wretched lying hate rubbish, since that is what hate-mongers do. You miserable prejudiced lying worm.
Linus, every rotten lying prejudiced hate-mongering word you spew makes you more disgusting; a professional hate-monger.
Ed, you are either a moron or more likely another lying hate-monger.
Shrum is one of the leading advocates of a Democratic party more attuned to populism...he's definitely not a conservative Dem.
Dear Jennifer,
I'm beginning to think that you secretly love me.
Linus

I had the same reaction when I saw this article, and then I realized that its appearance must fullfill some conservative/old world narrative quota that the editors believe they must to continue to meet.
Its like a radio station playing tired, top 40 crap when its clearly alt-indie time.
