The Real Porn Problem

09 May 2007 11:16 am

So here I am, trying to illegally download a bunch of songs in my effort to create the Ultimate Nineties Alt-Rock Playlist featuring all your favorite mainstream rock radio hits from back in the day, and I'm looking around for Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy" and all I can find is . . . pornography.

YouTube, by contrast, won't host any porn, so it's simply to find the "Sex and Candy" music video, but the playlist needs MP3 files and Acquisition is useless.

UPDATE: Thanks, commenters! I've got it now. (Haha, just joking, obviously I would never download any illegal MP3 files. That's right, Mr. RIAA, the whole thing was just some of the irony the kids enjoy these days.)

It took me one second to find "Sex and Candy" on Usenet. You want mp3 or lossless?

Dude, if you've got a six figure income, just download 'em from fucking iTunes instead of stealing 'em...

Got it in one using your favorite bittorrent search engine.

MY,
Are you sure there isn't any porn on YouTube? I haven't checked in a while. I know Mark Cuban provided a challenge to his blog readers to upload all sorts of stuff to YouTube to see how long it would take to get it taken down. I didn't check to see what the result was. Any one tried it lately?

Is it a good idea to talk about ongoing plans to commit illegal acts?

Thanks for the horrible, horrible earworm.

Porn and IP -- a perfect storm of Petey self-righteousness.

Marcy Playground is a fine place to start, but if that playlist doesn't have Dishwalla, you're wasting your time...

Are you going to post the playlist? I'm looking forward to nitpicking and complaining about it.

All right, I'll be the one to ask: who the fuck is Petey and why does he comment 12 times on every single post Matt has ever written? Is he a stalker or something?

"who the fuck is Petey and why does he comment 12 times on every single post Matt has ever written?"

12 times? I count one comment here, before you called me out by name.

I only comment 12 times on the threads that really interest me, like the ones on politics, policy, culture, or hoops.

Awesome. I've been trying to remember the name of that song for a while now.

Matt, you'll have to provide us with the complete playlist when it's complete.

The important question: what else is on the playlist? I know you already have "Flagpole Sitta" covered. Bound for the Floor, I hope?

Hey, I agree with Petey again. I don't think it's horribly wrong to download free music, but if you're an adult with a real job, isn't it just easier to get it for 99 cents a song from iTunes or wherever?

MY, post that playlist!

You're all under arrest.

Isn't the iTunes version horribly compromised with lame DRM?

This post perfectly points at a better solution to GFR's stated problem.

Drop IP protections for material that is likely exploitive.

we want to take moetary incentives out of that, but not punish glorious freedom.

sex&candy is alt-rock? in LA you couldn't get away from it, playing in every dentist office and the like on the adult contemporary/hits of the 80s sort of stations that Ryan Seascrest worked at. Blah.

I was composing this same playlist in my head the other day with my wife.

If you're putting on 1-hit wonders from the mid-90s that were played over and over, then I would suggest Primitive Radio Gods' "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" which is much better than the annoying Marcy Playground song. The Dishwalla mentioned above is better too.

I'd be interested in a discussion re: the tendency towards cryptic imagery found in music videoography these days. Seriously, what's going on in this clip? With "S&C" we have a fairly literal song. Even the words "Mama this surely is a dream" seem to bloster the impression that, no, it's not a dream, and somewhere is guy in a coffee-shop oogling an attractive woman. With the exception of "platform double suede" the rest of clip seems to have fuck all to do with the rest of the song. It's a lame trend and it needs to stop.

I tried doing this recently with cheesy early 90's hip-hopish stuff. Ah, Ini Kamoze.

Re: Sangfroid826

I don't know, this video seemed like a pretty straightforward faux-surreal metaphor for the whole "women are deviously using their sex appeal to ensnare men and make them bleed blue engine oil" theme. I'm mean, spiders dropping shoes as bait? Come one.

And frankly, judging by Nellie's infamous credit card swipe, what we really need is less literal music videos. . .

Others (esp. if you're zooming on in the mid-90s, a truly special time): Toad the Wet Sprocket, Lit, Eve 6, both the Verve and the Verve Pipe, and, of course, probably the ultimate Yglesias-now-writing-for-the-Atlantic band, Better Than Ezra.

Over here in Oakland, the prevailing opinion is that Cornell Haynes Jr.'s credit card swipe was an inspired bit of social commentary.

If you're using Mozilla, try an extension called Video Downloader - get it at:

http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

Of course, then you need a Flash player and a converter, but if you really, really want a file...

Here's the best solution. Go to http://vixy.net, enter the YouTube URL, select MP3, and click Start. The site will convert the entire video to an MP3 that you can save on your hard drive. Repeat as necessary.

When you put together that playlist, Matt, please share it with us, OK?

There is a $15 program you can get called TubeSock, originally only for Mac, now for PC as well, that let's you download YouTube & DailyMotion FlashVideo files, and convert them to mp3, or mp4 for iPod.

No comment on copyright issues from me, just the ifo about the program.
