We Agree, Then

John Hawkins at RightWingNews takes on allegations that the right is involved in perpetuating a Nazi-style "Stab in the Back" narrative about Iraq by perpetuating a Nazi-style "Stab in the Back" narrative.

I suspect that this is really about what's going to happen if people like Kleiman, Yglesias, Murtha, Reid, Obama, etc., successfully manage to throw the war in Iraq to Al-Qaeda because they think it will benefit the Democrats in the next election

Two of those five are not like the other three.

Liberals are in the process of stabbing the country, the troops, and the Iraqis that trusted us in the back.

who needs pictures, when you've got it in writing?

Who would have thought? It figures.

I notice that you're not only placed alongside Reid, Murtha, and Obama on the enemies' list... you're Public Enemy #2! I believe that makes you the Ace of Diamonds in the collectible deck of Liberal Traitors playing cards. Only Kleiman has slipped his dagger between the shoulder blades of our beloved troops with more gusto than you.

come on, Yglesias, he's got you dead to rights.

and it's totally not anti-semitism, he's just figured out your kind and your cunning ways.

you're complaining about all this stab-in-the-back stuff for the same reason why your people are always decrying those old anti-semitic stereotypes of jews drinking the blood of gentile babies--

it's so you can drink the blood of gentile babies!

I hope that disposes of these irresponsible allegations that anyone is perpetuating nazi-style slanders.

No real conservative would support the neocon / neoliberal war in Iraq. The transformation of the Middle East to liberal democracy is Jacobin, not conservative.

I signed the Conservative Exodus Project and thus will only support real conservatives.

I have a truck if you need help moving.

Speaking of Nazis, that Mark Kleiman really seems like the kind of person who would round up a group of people, ship them in box cars to a concentration camp, and then burn them in an oven, doesn't he? I mean, based on his posts. (See, that's what I love about Yglesias's site - he doesn't believe in Godwin' Law, so we are all free to follow his lead and call people Nazis all we want! Awesome!)

Ah, yes. The German Siegfried treacherously stabbed in the back (cue brooding, low strings from Wagner's Gotterdammerung to enhance the mood--I have the glorious Solti recording humming in my head)...

I'm not sure that most of the right-wingnuts who promote the betrayed-from-within line, anti-war liberals conveniently filling in for the Jews, are even fully aware of the dark, historical resonances of this putrid type of narrative. Not that they would necessarily have a problem with recycling old Nazi garbage, but I think they're mostly too imbecilic and ignorant to even have a real grasp of the larger, historical sweep regarding these things.

The Party of Personal Responsibility is never responsible for any of their multiple fuck ups, it's always someone else's fault.

The thing about this whole "stabbed in the back" myth is not that it may or may not have any connection to Nazis or what have you. Rather, it is that it's just totally retarded. It was retarded when the Germans claimed it, and it's retarded now. So it doesn't really matter if one inspired the other or not.

The Central Powers lost WW I because of the facts on the ground, not because of any third column betraying them on the home front. The situation in Iraq is the same: the Administration is not going to get the outcome it wants because of the facts on the ground, not because of anything anyone in the US does.

Again yglesias demonstrates a remarkable lack of comprehension.

Hawkins never denies that within the right the idea that significant numbers of lefties would be happy to see the iraq war lost doesnt enjoy currency. He simply, and correctly, points out how silly and crude it is for hacks like yourself to bend over backwards in your attempts to draw parralells with the nazi's. It's guilt by association at its most crass and if someoneone on the right were to exclaim that "the democrats are pusuing a nazi style social welfare system"(which would actually be a claim with far more substance than your own) then im sure you would be first to note it as such.

Dear Mr. Pimp Hand,
Please have your water tested for lead.

I see. Mr. Pimp Hand Strikes (Yo slap that bitch!) is evidently part of the historical-revisionist hard right that desperately attempts to paint the Nazis as a far-left party. Black is White. Up is Down. I'll stick to traditional history, thank you.

Yes indeed, the German Army won the First World War on the plains of France, only to have the traitors back in Berlin stab them in the back and rob them of the fruits of their victory. This was one of Mr. Hitlers' favorite election campaign slogans, guaranteed to get a rise out his listeners. It should not be at all surprising that the neocons and the fascist right in the US are beginning to warble this tune. It found little traction after the Vietnam adventure and I suspect it will not find much traction after the withdrawal from Iraq.
