Heritage Point

I thought this might be some kind of trailer park for houseboats, but it turns out to be a quite pricey gated community sort of thing.

I can remember when we still had them (trailer parks) on the Banks. Now they are all almost gone, though you can still find a few of the good ones south of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills area where 64 comes across from Manteo, or atleast three years ago some were left. All are now probably million dollar homes like the rest of it.

I'm not sure that Nags Head can really be considered Dixie.

Is "heritage" still a crypto-racist codeword for "no negros"?

oh c'mon city slicker, the indefinite article is a giveaway marker of "classiness" wherever you are--just substitute "bistro" for "residental boating community" and you'd recognize the place was upscale, no?

That's my assumption.

i did a little Googlin for "Heritage Plantation", thinking that'd be so chock-full with the crypto-racist overtones that nobody would dare use it. hah.

there are Heritage Plantations in Alabama, FL, GA and SC. but the one that keeps turning up over and over is on Cape Cod.

no conclusion.

Sometimes, but not necessarily. One of the older planned developments in NC is Heritage Hills, in ultra-liberal Chapel Hill.

the one that keeps turning up over and over is on Cape Cod.

"Plantation" in New England may have a colonial implication rather than a slavery implication. See, e.g., the colony of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations. later the State of Rhode Island . . .

Actually, the Ocean State's formal name remains the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

It's even on the letterhead, which I think is neat.

My guess with the C. Cod "heritage plantation," being a native of the region, is that it's main purpose is to instill feelings of faux-authenticity in the New Yorkers, Philadelphians, Bostonians and sundry other I-95 denizens who pollute the place in the summer.

Then again, maybe there are surreptitious racist landowners south of the Sagamore Bridge....

FS is correct... Nags Head does not dixie make.

The 'heritage' thing depends on the context of its usage. It has certainly been used as code for 'no negros' but it is not always the case.
