Watching conservatives find themselves staring at the pointy end of the Bush propaganda machine sure is fun. Here Rich Lowry is shocked to see that the White House is sometimes less than honest in its characterization of its own initiatives.

Indeed, that's some serious willful dishonesty.
Oh, by the way: We're winning!
Rich finishes the post with this unfortunate observation:
How stupid do these people think we are?
You gotta be at least a little embarassed for the guy. Eight years of willingly playing the useful idiot, and he's just noticing now...
This is the 2nd time Matt's posted something like this, and both times, it's the anti-immigrant conservative who's wrong, not the "Bush propaganda machine." Lowry says this bill gives illegal immigrants immediate, unconditional amnesty. It doesn't.
In the Washington Post story Lowry links to, some "deport 'em all" asshole gets caught being a little too honest. Here's the quote: "In our view, it is rewarding lawbreakers with the objective of their crime: giving them a job."
Yep, that's their big crime. They want jobs, from people who are willing to hire them. No-good lawbreakers!
Neil:
"What part of the immigration bill grants amnesty to undocumented immigrants?"
It's the part that says these high school dropouts can get legal residency (a "z" visa) virtually immediately, despite having broken the law to get here. Contrast this with university-educated applicants who follow the law and have to wait years in their home country for a visa.
Rich L:
"Oh, by the way: We're winning!"
Who's "we"? You and President Bush? You, President Bush, and the owner of the local landscaping company? You and Bush certainly aren't winning over the public, but you do stand a good chance of getting this bill rammed through Congress. Congrats.
Proponents of the immigration bill who claim it isn't amnesty are deliberately obfuscating the virtually immediate process (24 hours for a background check of millions of applicants?) for giving illegal aliens legal residency (a "z visa") with the more involved requirements for them eventually becoming citizens. Saying illegals have to "go to the back of the line" for citizenship may be true, but it's completely disingenuous: after all, the illegals will get to live and work here legally while they wait; most of those applying legally to immigrate here will have to wait years in their home countries for this privilege.
hey fred, are you the despicable putz, "Fred Jones", who got tossed out of ezra klein's site for actually reporting another commenter to the FBI?
cause if not, i'd change your handle. i mean, not your fault that the name 'fred' has come to smell bad. but that's how it is and all.
just shows you freds should hold each other to some standards.
"hey fred, are you the despicable putz, "Fred Jones", who got tossed out of ezra klein's site for actually reporting another commenter to the FBI?"
No. I don't spend any time on Ezra's site.
"cause if not, i'd change your handle."
I trust you to not be prejudiced against me because someone else with a similar name on a different blog allegedly referred someone to the FBI. By the way, what the fuck are you talking about? Why would the FBI be interested in a blog comment thread?
Fred sounds exactly like the commentor from Ezra's blog. I've always thought it was him, and I don't believe his denials for a second.
Too bad Matt didn't post a link to the National Review editors challenging the WSJ editors to a debate on immigration, or Real Clear Politics's take on it.
Nothing like good old fashioned political debate among conservatives. Should be interesting (if the WSJ editors don't wimp out).
Steve:
"Fred sounds exactly like the commentor from Ezra's blog. I've always thought it was him, and I don't believe his denials for a second."
Could you post a link to a comment from "me" on the Ezra Klein site? Because I honestly have no idea what you are talking about, but now you and Progga have me mildly curious.
Oddly, the link won't code up. Here we go:

No calling the Feds, now Mugsy.
Thanks for the link. Jesus, do you all of you folks post on the Ezra site too? All the same names. This one isn't enough of a time-waster?
Let me ask: Am I supposed to be more outraged that Fred Jones referred Bob to the FBI (or at least said he did) than Bob writing, "I have hated my country every day, and would turn it into a parking lot without hesitation."?
Aside from distasteful nihilism and puerile anti-Americanism, Bob also exhibits glaring stupidity by writing that. Best case scenario, he offers ammo to those who are eager to paint lefties as wanting to see America destroyed; worst case scenario, he makes himself a person of interest should anyone act on his wish. How stupid.
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
i agree, josephdietrich.
in fact, as soon as he asked for a link, instead of just clicking over himself, i smelled bad faith. even his declaration of honest curiosity didn't move me.
hi fred. you're a despicable putz.
Amanda Marcotte says hello.
"in fact, as soon as he asked for a link, instead of just clicking over himself, i smelled bad faith."
Look, there's no way I, commenting anonymously on this site, can prove to you, posting anonymously on this site, that I'm not some other guy who posted anonymously on another website. So it's pointless to argue with you. I will tell you that the reason I asked for a link is because I didn't want to waste my time wading through post after post on the Ezra site to find the offending comment thread.
If you are interested, since you and the other fellow brought up the Ezra site, I went over there and left my first comment. Since it's a typepad system, it automatically recongnized me by the pen name I had used on another typepad blog: Juan Carlos de Borbon y Borbon. Any future posts from me on that site would be under that name. Not that I plan on spending much time on the Ezra site though. It's bad enough to spend time reading what the 26 year old Matt Yglesias has to say; my understanding from reading MY is that Ezra is a few years younger. If I want opinions from college-age kids, I'll go to a college bar.
I just love the schtick that goes "I have no interest in what this blogger has to say, but I comment in every thread at his blog." Standard troll stuff, but still, it's amusing.
Steve:
"It's bad enough to spend time reading"... is not the same as saying I have no interest in reading what MY writes. Clearly, I do, otherwise I wouldn't read his stuff and comment on it. That doesn't mean it's not a waste of time though.
Steve writes: "Standard troll stuff, but still, it's amusing."
I suppose that spending most of the thread accusing Fred of being another commenter on another blog just for kicks is high level conversation. You snide, snickering people must think you are so clever.
I enjoy your comments a lot Fred. Leftists are being forced to read a little uncomfortable truth once in a while is always interesting.

What part of the immigration bill grants amnesty to undocumented immigrants? Is it the part where they have to pay thousands of dollars in fines, or the part where they have to get deported for a year before starting the immigration process?
