Q: Now how many brave, honest, super-smart people do we have left?
A: Not enough, obviously.
Here's hoping that Billmon posts somewhere about Steve. And look for Wolcott's take. And Juan Cole's.
How about a sentence or two about who this guy was and how he died? The link doesn't say.
Steve Gilliard was a former Marine who read voraciously and blogged ferociously, providing the best play-by-play on the looming military disaster in Iraq.
He was also, unfortunately as it turned out, a great blogger about food and eating.
We just lost one of our best friends.
serial catowner, Steve was not a former marine. He was, however, the son of a former marine and serious devotee of military history. He was also a great blogger, a blogger's blogger, if you will. I will miss him greatly. This is very sad news indeed.
Wow, he was just a couple of years older than my son. So Sad.
I read him fairly regularly and always appreciated his strong opinions. I knew he was ill, but was always unclear what he was sick with. Does anyone know? Was it related to that sinus infection he had a while ago?
KC, others will probably have more details than I do, but IIRC he had had heart trouble and an infection-- can't remember which came first-- and during his time in the ICU suffered a possible stroke as well. He had been on dialysis for some period of time before that, so I imagine he was very susceptible to such problems.
guy could write. it's a loss.
He had diabetes, and that led to a heart valve infection. While he was in ICU, he had a stroke that paralyzed one side of his body.
There was one post by his friend Jen stating that he was in a "clean room" sort of like a bubble boy.
They left his chest open after the operation to let it heal apparently? I'm not familiar with heart surgeries.
I'm assuming that the infections got worse and worse. in the hospital. (Maybe pneumonia?)
Shoot! Looks like an awfully nice guy -- wish I'd paid attention while he was alive.
Remember when he made that picture of Michael Steele as Sambo? Pretty strong stuff. No shrinking violet, he.
I'm very sorry to hear that. Gilliard did not run with the herd. He was his own man. For example, he was the blogosphere's leading expert on the military's IQ test. As I wrote in 2006:
"One of the more original voices on the web is Steve Gilliard who runs The News Blog. He's a black guy, hates Bush and all Republicans, but the interesting thing is that he writes more about Armed Forces Qualifying Test issues than anybody else. The military has been giving IQ tests to would-be recruits since 1917 and has an enormous amount of data on how people of different IQs perform on average in various jobs. Yet, almost nobody in the media even knows this exists. But Gilliard does."

Strange but it feels like a loss of a friend even though I never met him. I read his blog regularly and it was like a visit to a friend. It was like I knew him. Internet is really like a community.
Ding Dong, the witch is dead.
Go screw yourself, Jewbacca. A man just died.
R.I.P., Steve.

I'm not surprised but this is truly depressing.
