Terror In Switzerland

23 Jun 2007 12:10 pm

Jim Henley takes a closer look at Mitt Romney's PowerPoint of Terror and the results aren't very pretty. It turns out, for example, that Switzerland isn't under assault by terror groups looking to restore the Caliphate and "defeat the Modernity."

The map is entertaining. I love the types of events thy include.

"The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) claimed responsibility for burning a sign belonging to a construction company in Bellingham, Washington, which builds luxury homes"

Oh no, a sign! Save us Mr. Bush!

Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion faux pas in Peru. The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated "Shrek" films may have inadvertently offended Peruvians who suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring here Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong's favorite political slogans.

While explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru's Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words "Serve the People" printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao's most famous political slogan.

Much as I want to penetrate Ms. Diaz and make her moan, this turns me off. Down with the commie trash. Mr. Romney is far sexier any day.

DJ is right, the map is fun. Two incidents in Bethesda. One in 1980, the other in 1979.

A number of the incidents in DC were anti-Castro Cubans. I hope they, and the candidates/politicians they support, are under close surveillance.

The average American is more at risk from a bath-tub slip than from a terrorist attack, not to mention cancer, heart disease, diabetes, auto accidents, homicide and lightning strikes. Plus, what terrorism there is, according to the experts, is better countered with smart police action than with bombs and bullets, which tend to increase the terrorist threat. But a politician can't say the obvious truth. Kerry came close to saying it but he got shut down fast. So we get this silly terrorism talk, part of the political theater meant to sustain the military-industrial complex and enduring war.

What is the Modernity, exactly? I suppose it's a proper noun, otherwise Romney wouldn't bother with capitalization. So is the Modernity some kind of big collective with modern values and modern technology? Or something?

There's something really weird about listening to a guy who (at least when he's campaigning for the Republican base) is pretty regressive socially fret about the state of "the Modernity."

Given Romney's background and political affiliation, I would think he would be encouraging a fight against modernity.

The Modernity's second CD sucked.

And I always was a little dubious about Bethesda.

And do we need to rethink out relationship with the Kurds? They seem like they're quite the terraist.

So many questions to contemplate for a thoroughly modern Mormon.
