The Con

Word to the wise -- no fan of woman-fronted Canadian indie rock's record collection will be complete without Tegan & Sara's The Con. Given my general inclinations, I don't understand why it took me until last week to get my hands on So Jealous, but their both great. "Hop a Plane" on the new record wins bonus points for incorporating a "Clash City Rockers" riff into the beginning.

Filter observed that that track and the preceding one ("Back in Your Head") "are a little bit poppier and carefree-er, but we're probably not likely to hear them at baseball games, like we did 'Walking With a Ghost.'" This is probably true insofar as any particular song is extremely unlikely to get played at baseball games, but I'd say that "Hop" is definitely poppier than anything on So Jealous.

Ever since listening to Bradley Schlozman's helium-powered testimony before the Senate judiciary committee, my tolerance for this squeaky-voiced duo has plummetted, for some reason.

You never know what some hitter somewhere might pick for his intro music. I'm sure there must be at least one indie-pop fan playing in the major leagues.

You spelled "they're" wrong.

Bradley Schlozman's helium-powered testimony before the Senate judiciary committee...

Fox News should totally get smart and replace "Hannity & Colmes" with "Schlozman & Ponnuru."

Lampwick: I know what you mean. Geddy Lee pretty much ruined Sleater Kinney for me.

As for Tegan and Sara, I kind of thought So Jealous was a clunker. I liked If It Was You, though, so I'll definitely give this new one a listen.

oh, matt. your musical taste makes baby jesus cry. spencer, can you please step in, have an intervention or something?

I'm a 36-year old man who likes listening to Giant Drag. Why do feel like I'm going to be arrested for pedophilia for this? Sigh; guess I'll have to grow up and start listening to Handel or something.

" 'Hop a Plane' on the new record wins bonus points for incorporating a 'Clash City Rockers' riff into the beginning."

Or as we called it in the old days, an "I Can't Explain" riff

Damn you, Matt. You made me feel like a bad T&S fan before I realized that my instincts were right and The Con comes out on July 24th. This is when it sucks to have scruples. Anyway, of the songs available on their MySpace page, "The Con" is easily one of their best songs ever while "Back In Your Head" seems a bit too cloying.

"their both great" what?

I really like "Back in Your Head".
