When September Ends

13 Jun 2007 12:04 pm

In case you were wondering whether Republicans will really turn against the war if there's not progress by September, note that we're actually in the midst of witnessing significant regress. Drum and Rosenfeld lay it out, but American casualties are up, the Iraqi government hasn't met any of its political benchmarks, and the Pentagon is now raising estimates of the number of Iraqi security forces that need to be trained.

Like Atrios, I'll only believe the Republiscum will turn against the war when the votes come in for an override of a Commander Guy veto. If they vote to override that veto, then you can color me impressed, until then I won't. They can talk the game all they want, but until they back it up with action, they are not to be believed.

I have to believe some republicans (privately at least) are against the war. the problem seems to be the party leadership and cheerleaders.

This summer you can expect to see a coordinated and concerted effort to play down the importance of September. The situation will change, new reasons to be optimistic will be presented and the whole thing will be framed as snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. You know, the normal political hatchetry.

Lots of this from places like Fox News: http://thependulumblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/funny_15.html

"Republiscum". First time I've heard that one. Classy. Anywho, thought you folks might be interested in reading this op/ed by Iraq's PM: Our Common Struggle
America had its civil war. Why expect freedom to come easy to Iraq?

America had its civil war. Why expect freedom to come easy to Iraq?

Yes! Thank god that the British maintained an occupying force and allowed the Americans only partial sovereignty. If it weren't for the British surge of troops in the 1830s, perhaps there would be no America today.

The Iraqi PM could extend a better deal to the Sunnis while keeping his allies firmly in toe. He has failed to do so. Why are we supposed to babysit him while he continues to be an ass?

Wait, I thought it wasn't a Civil War. I thought it was an insurgency. Or was it al Qaeda fighters coming into Iraq and messing up the place. Or is it South Korea? I remember President Bush comparing it to Vietnam at one point.

Which war is this again? All of the Republican Talking Points seem so confused.
