A Classic Debate

Thanks to the good offices of Rob Goodspeed I'm now a Late Night Shots member, and it really is hilarious. I'm reading through a thread on whether or not it's acceptable to go out in Adams-Morgan. Many of the early posts center on the question of whether or not it's a dangerous neighborhood. Then one poster chimes in:

With me (and I assume this is the case with others), the question is whether I would go to Adams Morgan and hang out with a bunch of thugs and poorly bred, unattractive girls, or go to Georgetown, where it is safe, people are more courteous and the bars are nicer.

Another counters:

I don’t know. I saw a lot of poorly bred, unattractive girls this pas Thursday in Georgetown.

If you want hot girls, go to the suburbs where they don’t have happy hour. My recently graduated brother is doing 45 min of cardio 4x a week - just because there’s nothing else to do when he gets out of work at 5:30.

I actually totally agree with this anti-AM sentiment, though mostly that's because the neighborhood is too LNS-ey for my taste. At any rate, I just hope these guys don't make it any further east than Adams-Morgan or else I might run into them somewhere.

I couldn't figure out what the hell they were blathering about until somebody at a blog mocking them pointed out that the WASPier-than-thou LNSers figure that all doctors are (gasp!) Jewish.

I dunno. I read the City Paper article today, and it was pretty much up to City Paper standards -- a lot of vacuous writing about as insignificant a topic as one could imagine. There's a reason why the City Paper has always been free.

I mean, I don't think I'd want to hang out with the purportedly evil and decadent folks in the article, but so what? It wasn't even clear to me that they're really all that influential or "elite", and if there are 14,000 of them in the DC area, they aren't exactly "exclusive" either. They seem to have jobs that are pretty typical for DC. For Christ's sake, one of the women that the article blathered on about at length is a secretary.

You know what would be real news? If the rest of City Paper had the credibility of "News of the Weird", and "Wonkette" broke out of her Maureen-Dowd-The-Next aspirations.

Same sh*t different city, ever checked out leveragedsellout.com up in NY? I think you all need to relax, its humor that exists among a subset of recent grads everywhere...Oh and AdMo is dangerous, I lived there for a year before moving to Georgetown. Muggings and murders on a fairly consistent basis. Ive never been scared of it and I dont think these kids are either, they are just stating the obvious. That scene is an absolute trainwreck come 2am.

My point about the equally poor breeding in Georgetown - and by that I mean the Point - was tongue-in-cheek.

One sad effect of the City Paper article is that outsiders have been primed to think forum contributors believe what they say.
