Forgetting Anything?

Harold Ford and Martin O'Malley have a very curious op-ed in The Washington Post speaking up for the continuing vitality and necessity of the DLC:

Most Americans don't care much about partisan politics; they just want practical answers to the problems they face every day. So far, our leading presidential candidates seem to understand that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. That's why they have begun putting forward smart, New Democrat plans to cap and trade carbon emissions, give more Americans the chance to earn their way through college, achieve universal health care through shared responsibility, increase national security by rebuilding our embattled military and enable all Americans who work full time to lift themselves out of poverty.

There are a few different ways of looking at this, but I don't think anyone on the left has ever derided the DLC because they don't like universal health care or curbing carbon emissions. Similarly, if the DLC vanished tomorrow we'd have plenty of other outlets prepared to devise health care plans and cab-and-trade schemes. Indeed, as I was saying yesterday, it's precisely the proliferation of alternative venues for this sort of thing over the past 10 years that's made the DLC so dispensable.

The thing that, by contrast, really makes the DLC stand out from alternative institutions like the New America Foundation or the Center for American Progress was its steadfast support of the Iraq War, going so far as to provide a platform for hard-core right-wingers like Marshall Wittman on a common platform of anti-Bush militarism. Now they want to talk about their plan to "increase national security by rebuilding our embattled military" which is nice, though no such plan seems to actually exist, but again is totally indistinct from what you can get everywhere else.

Do you really expect anything more than mushy bullshit from the DLC? Any high schooler would shake their head at the muddled mess that this op-ed is. They even admit their hero is "Scoop" Jackson. They think any problem can be solved by military force. Problem is, they have corporate backers, so they get shit like this published in the WaPo. If we don't rid the party of these asshats, we'll never get close to accomplishing our goals. They want to be called Democrats, but they want to take the easy way. I wish other Democrats would wake up and see that the DLC is up to no good, and does our party more harm than good.

I'm not sure how "anti-Bush" Marshall Wittmann's militaristic blog posts were.

This post is just wrong factually. Their Iraq cheerleading is far from the only problem with the DLC. Plenty of real Democrats (like me) have had no use for the DLC--and its blowhard leaders like Al From--pretty much its inception (i.e., the DLC Clinton administration was far too conservative for liberal Democrats). No offense, since I find much of your work interesting, but problems like this arise when your personal knowledge of history as an adult does not even extend back to Bush 41.

It isn;t just the pro war stuff, it is the smug holier than thou self righteousness that permeates everything they say, epitomized by this line:

"Most Americans don't care much about partisan politics; they just want practical answers to the problems they face every day."

The clear implication is that everyone besides the noble souls at the DLC doesn't care about finding practical answers, we are driven by partisan politics.

I'd forgotten about that loon Marshall Whitman (my apologies to that noble bird of the North); he's quite a piece of work. Especially that annoying-cutesy "the Moose avers X and Y -- and the Left hates America" style he had.

Well, partisanship usually translates into paying attention to politics, evaluating & criticizing various policy positions, and eventually deciding that the best odds of principled effectiveness lie with a particular partisan identification. The DLC, Broder, and most of the other self-described 'centrists' (nothing centrist about a lack of principle IMO) seem to be fairly reluctant to undertake this process for themselves, and absolutely appalled that regular Americans might. It makes sense that those who produce contentless 'ideas' wouldn't want the general population to have either the tools or the inclination to notice their lack of substance, if you think about it.

The downside is that there's a kernel of truth in their claim, because Americans-- excepting the fanatical right and a tiny, tiny fringe of the pre-blogging-era left-- have preferred to avoid the heavy lifting of political ideology, and can still easily be bored & irritated enough by politics to tune out.

Re the WashPost OpEd "So far, our leading presidential candidates seem to understand that the proof of the pudding is in the eating "

Interesting, giving that the DLC has been serving US citizens dog shit on a platter for the past 15 years.

Why is it that the GOP never worries about not offending swing voters? Why is it that the MSM never warns the GOP about the dangers of pandering to their base?

The GOP governs exclusively for the benefit of their base. They don't worry about swing voters. Their main concern is keeping their right wing base happy. This has worked just fine for them. The further right they move the further right the center as defined by Broder moves with them.

Dems OTOH are constantly warned about swing voters. They are told they must Sister Souljah their base every chance they get. And where has it gotten them?

The problem with the DLC and centrism is the DC concept of "center". The GOP understands this and they have rigged the system so that the center is always moving to the right. They take the most radical right position on any given issue confident in the knowledge that Broder types will immediately designate the midpoint as "serious", "responsible", "mainstream".

If there were no DLC, where would Faux News get its Democrats?

For an organization that denigrates partisanship, the DLC has been all about factionalism, having denigrated and ridiculed anyone who dares to be more than about 1.7 millimeters to their left.

Meanwhile, they criticize, but display no similar level of antipathy towards, those well to their right.

This is what's earned them the enmity of those of us to their left: despite their claims of nonpartisanship, they are effectively anti-left partisans. Now that that game's up, they're trying to crawl back and pretend to be peace-loving souls.

Bullshit.

Marlowe is right. The DLC will not be remembered for its Iraq policy -- which it shared more or less with most Democratic politicians -- because liberals had long since distanced themselves from the unpleasant, Gingrich-dominated centrism of the 90s that orchestrated by DLC and its team, including Clinton. Welfare reform was a sour pill. The other two groups you mention, of course, had not been founded yet.

Well, we'll see, won't we. From's point is that the Dem presidential candidates are now playing on half the field, catering to liberals, and when a year from now--a year!--they have to play on the whole field, trying to appeal to the whole electorate and not just libs their stances will move right.

Where's the evidence that they won't? Kerry was Bushlite and so are congressional Dems--witness the latest rubber-stamping of the unconstitutional FISA renewal.

I don't agree with it, I'm just sayin'.

P.S. Nobody has commented on the excellent Army photo which I think is apropos of . . .

I love the double speak euphemisms by the DLC corporate bottom dwelling slime.

"achieve universal health care through shared responsibility" => enrich the insurance comapanies who skimmed off $13,000,000,000 in profits from YOUR health care.

"increase national security by rebuilding our embattled military" => siphon off a few more TRILLIONS for the Military Industrial Complex so YOU and your kids for generations to come will be laden with crushing debt and be left with no safety, security or control over your life (Your ass is now in the hands of usurring bankers that the DLC Hillary doll loves!)

"and enable all Americans who work full time to lift themselves out of poverty" => competing with the third world labor for slave wages because the DLC master Bill Clinton NAFTed your future economic security away in FREE trade agreements.

The DLC saved the Democratic party in the 1980s and 1990s. That's all there is to it.

The DLC seems to be afraid of the very partisan fights that are necessary in a thriving and robust democracy. When I hear Harold ford speak, I can close my eyes and imagine that I’m listening to a moderate republiCON. Now is a time for passion, clarity, conviction, and strong debate. Time for bold moves, not concessions, and pandering to the bush minions now running/trashing things, or the mushy middle ground. When you hug the center, and vilify the left and right, it only shows a total lack of real commitment to true change.

I would like to know how many of the democratIC congressmen and women that voted in favor of the criminal bush spying bill were members of the DLC. My bet is that a majority are DLC members and Blue dog dems (i.e. southern republiCONs).

Besides, any group that would proudly count LIEberman as a member should just be disbanded and forgotten.

Blue Dogs are not the same as DLCers.

Let's save our anger for the people who have done the real damage to this country. Republicans. Not the DLC, not Democrats. Republicans.

We are stronger united than divided. You hate Nafta? Fine. I can live with that. What I can't live with are any more Republicans.
