Monday Weird Charity Scheme Blogging

I'm not sure I really understand Tyler Cowen's idea here, but I think you have to respect it. In the meantime, if you like his blog, his book -- Discover Your Inner Economist -- won't disappoint. It manages to hit that sweet spot of being like the blog, but not in a way that makes you feel like you've already read it all.

"Creative Destruction" was one of the most disappointing social science books I read. The article summaries he wrote for the book were interesting, but his actual book was so overly simplistic (and a bit obsessed with reggae) that it was kind of odd.

I have a mere econ degree (no PhD), so I'm at ease with the good popularized econ out there (Levitt, Krugman, Frank, etc), and the thing about Cowen is that he selects the subjects where the harsh answer seems to be the correct answer. He makes econ look mean. But often he's just using econ to dress up a political preference.

Econ is ultimately about choices about resources, and it's not all a fact that the libertarian choice is the right choice, or the society that produces the most widgets is the best society.
