Oh my God it's 9AM and already there's a Democratic debate on TV and I've missed a lot of it. I continue to be shocked by Joe Biden's behavior in this campaign -- like most people, I assumed he was running for Secretary of State, which seemed to imply he should be nice to the people who have a chance of winning. Instead he's way meaner than everyone else.

Right. For all we know Biden is running for SoS, and this is as nice as he knows how to be. It's tough to be shocked when he continues to be the same man he's been for decades.
I don't think he's running for SOS; his ego is big enough for him not to realize he has no chance of winning.
I never considered the man to be particularly bright. I don't think it's dawned on him that he isn't ever going to be president.

I realize you're not up on the latest technological advances, but there's this product out there called TiVo that could really help you out in these situations.

I'm watching on a bit of a delay, and one thing I'll note is that Edwards fucking owns the audience.
It was Biden who complimented the Indian Americans on their 7-11 monopoly, and then said "I'm not joking" right?
Secretary of State?
How many Democratic Senators do you want to leave in 2008? So far I've heard people dreaming of the Hillary-Obama ticket and now Joe Biden for SoS.
And I'd be more impressed with Biden if he wasn't pushing his disastrous "soft-partition" plan for Iraq.
I've actually really enjoyed what I've seen of Biden this campaign--he's speaking his mind, is confident when talking about foreign affairs, and most of the time I agree with what he says.
I think Biden's "meanness", if that's what it is, stems from his frustration about being in a losing position vis a vis people he doesn't respect, i.e., Obama and Edwards.
Hunter Thompson was right on this one. Presidential candidacy has similar effects on a pol as the rutting season has on a bull moose. The brain gets locked on a singular idea - "I can have all the cows/I can be President" - and thats it. Lowering your head and charging the oncoming train is the obvious next step.

Probably true. Biden always has viewed himself as one of the Very Serious.
Perhaps Biden is running for Secretary of State . . . in a Republican adminstration!
Biden's partition plan, as evidenced from the debate, is growing more and more popular, though it may never reach the necessary critical mass. He's already said he doesn't want, and might not accept, SoS. He may not have the support that Bill Panderson...Richardson has, but I think he should be taken seriously.
Thankfully, as at the ABC GOP debate, there were absolutely no questions about immigration matters. I really think George is doing a tremendous public service by not asking about this issue, since that's where the candidates are weakest and asking real questions about it would reveal that most aren't qualified for any public office. Thanks for the journalism, George.

Which is why I hate the idea of Biden as SoS.
Partition is a terrible idea that would simply compound the problems currently facing Iraq. It's just the latest in a series of continually worse ideas set forth by the supporters of the original invasion.
It would involve ethnic cleansing on a scale we haven't yet seen complete with the slaughter and battle for territory that always accompanies these schemes.
It also ignores the fact that Iraq is broken into more than 3 hostile parties, Sunni, Shia and Kurd are only the easiest distinctions for Americans to see. Look at the battles in the overwhelmingly Shiite city of Basra as the Brits have begun pulling out.

That's why I chuckle whenever someone mentions Biden for SoS. He's not very diplomatic.
