Iyad Allawi sure does seem to be spending a lot of cash on Republican lobbying firms. Personally, if I had $300,000 to spend I really, really, really wouldn't spend it trying to persuade the US government to install me as Prime Minister of Iraq, but some people are more power-hungry than others.

Book advance all gone, then?
Hrm. Weren't there some discussions of large crates of money disappearing early on in the occupation?
I wonder how easy it is to launder money through the lobbying firms in DC.
C'mon Matt, the Atlantic pays you at least that much, don't they? I hear that's what Sullivan makes, anyway.
You're assuming it's his money to spend as he wishes?
I suppose it's no more crazy than taking a job with the Bush administration at this point.
The Greenwald piece is Must See TV. Read it.
Yeah, I don't think he's spending his own scratch.
The FARA database is a great place to check in on the activities of boutique lobbying firms who represent various global ne'er do wells. Check out some documents from BG&R's past here:

Well I'm sure Allawi and those who are supporting/encouraging/working with him are concerned about a democratic Iraq where oil revenues go to make a better life for the little people. Only a cynic would suggest that Allawi and his DC allies are seeking to set him up as a friendlier-than-Saddam strongman who would make sure oil flows West.

Forensic accounting could probably explain a lot of why various people vie to stay in, or become, part of the Iraqi leadership.
I'm sure there are a few TRUE IRAQI PATRIOTS there, but I bet there are many many more with obscenely huge bank accounts they didn't have five years ago.
A few hundred million dollars is a powerful incentivizer.
