"They Don't Want Us There"

29 Aug 2007 08:35 am

Now that's what I call television -- Bill Kristol versus military wife on C-SPAN:

Speaking of C-SPAN, tomorrow at 10:30 AM on C-SPAN 2 you can check out official Friends of Mine Julian Sanchez and Spencer Ackerman along with Nita Chaudhary from MoveOn and Caroline Fredrickson from the ACLU talking FISA.

Hmmm. I'm not a fan of Bill "bomb 'em" Kristol, but he seemed to handle that question as well as anyone could expect. Assuming he isn't lying about his longstanding commitment to maintaining a larger army and marine corp, then he managed to used rhetoical jiu jitsu to enlist the caller's concerns into his own agenda, which is a pretty neat trick considering what she was saying.

What a fucking weasel.

He's a thug.

Oh yeah, Bill is slick. That's your key propagandist skill right there.

With 50 seconds left, Kristol appears to say "I was in the service." As I understand it, Kristol has NEVER served in the military. Or did I mishear things?

steve, you misheard, he said something like he respects them and something about a dinner with a friend who has a kid in the military.

but Kristol is still a scumbag.

If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's that you can't shame a person who has no shame.

Matthew C:
That friend is likely Eliot Cohen. Cohen used to teach at Johns Hopkins and replaced Zelikow at SoS, but is a fellow PNAC'er and neo-con. Cohen's son served overseas(not sure if it was Afghanistan, Iraq or both). One of the very few in Kristol's crowd to actually have "skin in the game" so to speak.

One silver-lining byproduct of the terrible ordeal the caller expressed *could* be the military breaking Democratic in 2008. It'd hard to think of a more explicit repudiation of the GOP's losing foreign policy.

One of the very few in Kristol's crowd to actually have "skin in the game" so to speak.

Ledeen, too. He's a nutter, but he's a nutter with skin the game.

Someone sign that woman up for a national speaking tour. And if the Democrats were serious about ending this war, they'd run her for Congresss.

Mr. Davis, I have to disagree when you say "He's a thug."

I would maintain that he's a smug, glib, condescending little turd of a thug.

Let's not malign thugs here - at least a thug puts his own life on the line to earn his paycheck. In the taxonomy of crime, Kristol's more of a weasel than a thug.

This video is from several months ago. Not that it doesn't deserve to be replayed every day.

It was nice of Bill to finally stop doing his crossword and look at the camera.

"One of the very few in Kristol's crowd to actually have "skin in the game" so to speak."

Isn't Bill Kristol's son training to be a Marine officer in Harvard's NROTC?

He's a thug.

A thug would be physically or metaphorically capable of harming me by himself. Kristol could do no such thing. He is, however, a toady.

Kristol has it totally BackAsswards, as usual (and the woman does also, honestly). The answer is not to bring back the draft or expand the military, it's to stop invading and occuping countries in order to change their governments.
If that woman feels her family is bearing an unfair burden, then her husband should not re-up, not try to expand the burden to everyone else.
If this was a important fight for our existance, and not some debacle dreamed up by pasty-faced War Nerds like Kristal, more then enough people would be signing up with out the draft.

KevinD, I think you misunderstood what the woman was saying. She said IF this war is so vitally important to the survival of America, we should institute the draft. She calling Kristol and the others like him on their inconsistencies.

I'm sorry SJ, I have to disagree. At no time does she declare that the war itself is wrong, only that she wishes to be relieved of the burden.
Kristal and his followers have not been inconsistent, they have always pushed for a expanded military to enable their global conquest nonsense. Pres Bush HAS been inconsistent, declaring this to be the new World War Fight for our lives, but has refused to expand the military to fight it because he doesnt' want to endanger his tax cuts. This is why people like Kristal have critized him. If you believe the war is wrong, you should say so and state why, not do a Charles Rangel and say "lets bring back the draft"

Skin in the game (in this context) means _your_ own hide on the ground in Iraq.

Anything less is pure cowardice.
