I actually watched some of the US Senior Men's Basketball team demolishing Canada yesterday afternoon, and I have to say that that was some boring, boring stuff. I'm all for the US fielding better teams than what we had in '04 and '06 but the kind of dominance that seems on display in this FIBA Americas tournament is just profoundly dull. The good news is that NFL is just around the corner and the long, dark sports desert of the summer is coming to an end.

matthew's hatred of baseball is never more on display than in posts like this one, which is the one that should have been labelled "sunday ignorance blogging."
indeed, to see matthew at his worst, see him justify his baseball hatred!
Freddie, unless i'm really suffering from a memory failure, petrovic and kukoc weren't soviet players although the young sabonis was a monster.
Right but wouldn't they have been, if they Union was still together in 92? That's what I mean, if the USSR was still around they would have been on the team, or I so I thought.
why do people come here for no other purpose than to insult MY ?
Petrovic and Kukoc are Croatian (or Yugoslavian pre-1992). Sabonis was Lithuanian, so he was an ex-Soviet, but not the other two.
Also, there actually was a Soviet team more or less in 1992; most of the Soviet republics competed as a single "unified team" that year, since the U.S.S.R. had broken up so late in 1991, but the Baltic republics (including Lithuania) were, IIRC, able to feed their own teams, so it's a moot point as far as Sabonis is concerned.
Freddie:
Petrovic and Kukoc were/are Croation and would not have played for the Soviet team.
Humorous typo alert: of course, I meant "field their own teams," not "feed their own teams."
Please God, make Bill Walton stop. I was only half watching the game but his commentary was like a jackhammer in my head.
Whoops, my mistake.
It'll be interesting to see what happens tonight in the Brazil game. They'll be the first decent team the US has faced, and should give at least some indication as to whether this US squad is actually different, or whether it's 02, 04, and 06 all over again.
Leandro Barbosa isn't Bilbo Rautens or whoever the heck Canada had playing PG while Steve Nash plays hackey-sack in Central Park or whatever. Look for the USA v. Brazil game to be much better.
In related news I think Barack Obama and Tayshaun Prince are the same person. I'm not sure which one is Clark Kent and which one is Superman but it's the same guy. Trust me.
funny - many of us see the "long sports desert" as lasting from the end of October until the beginning of April. Different strokes...
cleek, that's an interesting question, but it has nothing to do with my giving matthew's well-known dislike of baseball a nudge: anyone who regards football, of all things, as a break from the "sports desert" of baseball season may be brilliant on many other matters, but doesn't have his aesthetics lined up appropriately for sports.
while Steve Nash plays hackey-sack in Central Park or whatever
Last sighting was indeed in Central Park, playing footy with Claudio Reyna.
No Ben Gordon in the US squad, and Brits will be hoping that he misses the cut for Beijing, so that he's available for the UK team (w/ Luol Deng) in 2012.
I refuse to watch FIBA games for purely aesthetic reasons: I hate the trapezoidal lane. It just screams "bush league" to me.
Please God, make Bill Walton stop.
Seriously, Bill Walton is the most annoying announcer of all time. I know it is a blowout game, but a lengthy plug of Neil Young's forthcoming album. Yuck.

If you do it somewhere else, he might not see it.
Seriously, I understand that not everyone likes baseball. But to love every sport, seemingly without discrimination (even football fans hate the NFL!), except baseball just seems like evidence of a deep moral failing.

I really wish the Soviet team had been together for the '92 games, because they actually would have given the Dream Team a game. The Americans would have won, of course, but that team would have been ridiculous. Sabonis at his nastiest (you have to check some youtube of him as a young man, he was really incredible), Drazan Petrovic, Toni Kukoc... that would have been a great team to watch.
