Crank Dat

25 Sep 2007 11:25 am

Kriston Capps contemplates the larger meaning of Soulja Boy: "To what end does Soulja Boy crank? Can the interests of a declining American Empire withstand a coalition of crank-datted superheroes and beloved cartoons? Soulja Boy wants to crank dat over here and over there—what will be the price we pay?"

One suspects the price may be high, indeed.

As someone who often appreciates reggae/hip-hop... that is an awesomely bad song.

As someone who came of age during the Public Enemy-to-Fugees phase of hip-hop, this just makes me cry.

Where have all the MCs gone?

Am I that old? Does Sista Souljah really have a college-age son? Last time I was this shocked is when I discovered that the Ramones weren't really brothers...

Well I came of age with Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambatta and I LOVE Souljah Boy. There.

At what point does something become pop music. My favorite mc of all time is Big L. Now the gulf between Big L and Souljah is pretty large. Between Souljah and top 40 (can't/won't give example) is much smaller. Who decides what it is. Ohhh and since everyone else is adding this to give them cred, I came of age in the time of Daft Punk.

The kids love him. Old people smell.

I agree with this comment to Kriston - it also applies to Matt:

"The people at The Onion have asked me to tell you to leave this sort of thing to the professionals."
