Osama bin Laden may be on to something. He sounds like he would govern like a Republican (low taxes, no gay rights) but would sound like a Democrat (war is bad, Bush is a moron).
I think Osama may be triangulating a bit since he also came out against big corporations and global warming.
If you look at the rest of OBL`s statements, he`s clearly a Ron Paul Supporter. "you made one of your greatest mistakes, in that you neither brought to account nor punished those who waged this war, not even the most violent of its murderers, [former Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld…"
All throughout the offices of the AEI and the National Review, I can see thought bubbles appearing over wingnut heads: "Hmm, maybe we've judged this Islamic extremism thing too harshly..."

Well, bin Laden apparently views the Democrats as a useless opposition. The answer is, of course, Islam!!! Most 'interesting' about bin Laden's apparent reasoning is WHY giant corporations manipulate the USA and the world: It's because they are too committed to democracy, and only democracy is keeping the world from Islam, the true answer. So, maybe he's not an Islamo-Fascist, maybe he's an Islamo-Communist, or Islamo-Maoist, or whatever. It's just so stupid it's not even funny. So in answer to the question about the causes of the Democrats' failure to stop the war, I say: they are the same reasons which led to the failure of former president Kennedy to stop the Vietname war. Those with real power and influence have the most capital. And since the democratic system permits major corporations to back candidates, be they presidential or congressional, there shouldn't be any cause for astonishment -- and there isn't any -- in the Democrats' failure to stop the war... You get it? The way we get all our giant corporations to finally listen to us ordinary folks and do our bidding is to threaten to convert to Islam. Of course. Right. After all, it's not like any big, greedy corporations are at work in Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, or UAE. No, it's all workers' paradise over there. It's been six years. Maybe I missed it, but when I read the xscript, as beowulf pointed out, I don't think I had ever encountered the argument that had only Europe's Jews of the early 20th century left Europe to settle in Muslim lands would they have been safe from European Christian (i.e., as the Nazis would fit in OBL's ideology) persecution and genocide. Osama bin Laden appears to suggest that he wished that the Jews of Europe had come to settle in Muslim lands. Now there is an argument you don't here from radical jihadists every day.

You guys are forgetting that Osama may be trying to trick us on taxes, just as he's trying to trick us into staying in Iraq. So when he says we should have taxes of 2.5% under an Islamic system, maybe he really wants us to raise taxes? Perhaps he remembers the economic dynamo the Great Satan was in the 1970's with 70% income tax rates and is nostalgic for that time.
Its hilarious Bin Laden is plugging Mike Scheuer's book (Scheuer was the CIA officer in charge of finding Bin Laden in the 90's). Its like Manson giving a cover blurb to a Vincent Bugliosi book. "And our holding firm to this magnificent Book is the secret of our strength and winning of the war against you despite the fewness of our numbers and materiel. And if you would like to get to know some of the reasons for your losing of your war against us, then read the book of Michael Scheuer in this regard."

I'm actually relieved that his script was less mysterious and more blatantly idiotic, so that his rallying power to potential terrorist recruits is lessened. I believe that Zakaat is calculated on assets, not income. Which, given the state of indebtedness of most Americans, makes this an even better deal that it would at first appear.

Silly Boy, Now that's interesting--- so the Bin Laden tax plan is a wealth tax and not an income tax. Let's see 2.5% of $54 trillion of household wealth (as of last year) raises $1.35 Trillion, well shy of the $2 trillion the present tax system raises. Beyond the constitutional problems on imposing a direct federal tax on property-- it is a flat tax, it sits at the very base camp on the left slope of the Laffer Curve and it certainly starves the beast. So yeah, this is good supply side stuff.
I agree that this is quite likely the best blog thread ever. More post-modernist ironic sarcasm per column inch than a Wolcott column. And it seems to be coming from all political stripes too! It's healthy too. Make fun of a terrorist; that is the ONLY way to "win" any kind of "war" on terror.
They're not in it for the virgins. To inject a probably-inappropriate level of seriousness into the thread, I'm irked by the harping on the 72 virgins; it's great for making fun of terrorists, but gets them as wrong as thinking that Eric Rudolph was in it for the eternal harp playing. These people do what they do because they think it's right. I'm sure that sexual repression makes them easier to manipulate, but they do their atrocities in what they think is an obviously right and righteous cause, and might even consider themselves more noble if they thought God would give them no special treatment. To beat them, we must take them seriously and understand them (as one would understand a dangerous animal, no kum-ba-yah necessary). This is beyond some people, who focus on the virgins because to remember that these guys are doing what they think is right and necessary because there's a nasty corollary that begins, "I'm doing what _I_ think is right and necessary...." Some people want to believe that good intentions are all it takes to be doing the right thing...or maybe they don't want to think of the extra danger posed by people who think---no, "know"---they're right.
Sorry, that should have been ...because to remember that these guys are doing what they think is right and necessary would be to risk encountering a nasty corollary... [change emphasised].
Before voting Osama '08, I need some specifics. Will kites be banned? What about my Madonna video, Like a Houri? What brand of tent will women be required to wear? Will cheating on taxes be a hand chopping offense? Hands come in handy sometimes.

Heads in the Sand
Considering the state of flux in the GOP Presidential field, it's really not too late for OBL to get in and have a serious shot at winning the Republican nomination.
He'd be able to espouse a more conservative foreign policy than anyone but McCain, and with his "Fair Alms" tax proposal, he'd have a more conservative economic plan than any of them.
And, of course, given his views on social issues, I think GOP voters could rely on his judicial appointments.
