CFG Versus Huckabee

19 Oct 2007 07:49 am

I learned in comments to a post from yesterday the interesting fact that the Club For Growth has actually put together a whole Huckabee-bashing website lest anyone ever get the idea that one could be a conservative and have less than perfect fealty to the Tax God Idols.

Huckabee is beloved by a group called Americans for Fair Taxation (Fairtax.org) who support abolishing the current tax code and replacing it with a national sales tax. GFR covered Huckabee's ties to Fairtax.org in the Iowa Independent.

That's what makes David Brooks' column today so inane. Huckabee only has the strong support of one out of the three groups that generally comprise the GOP base -- the social conservatives. He doesn't have the economic conservatives (Rudy or Romney) or the military conservatives (Rudy).

I'm not sure where the anti-immigrant xenophones go. Not Rudy b/c of NYC, not Romney b/c of past apostasy, not Huckabee (see comments to MY's earlier post).

Fred is making a play for them, but he's such a terrible candidate that it's hard to see anything he does as mattering much.
