Decisive! (Again and Again)

09 Oct 2007 11:12 am

An email from John McCain's campaign:

Tonight John McCain will once again take the stage with his Republican opponents and face off on the issues important to America. If the past debates are any indication, this debate will be another decisive night in which John McCain will stand head and shoulders above his opponents and prove that he is the only one who is ready to lead our country on day one.

How many more decisive nights are there going to be?

Since this is comming from folks who were talking about the next Friedman unit being decisive, I guess that they use a bit different dialect of English than most of us.

For example, in my mother tongue, to say that something will happen eventually ("eventualnie") means "it is not impossible that it will happen", rather than "sooner or later but surely". I discern a similar shift in meanings here. Eventually, McCain's superiority over other candidates will shine as brightly as the Arizonian sun at high noon. (One can argue that even the Polish sense is absurd here, but opinions may differ).

Are the other candidates arguing they'll be ready to lead the country on day 15 or 20, rendering themselves inferior to McCain's super-readiness abilities?

The real question is, "Lead our country where?" If it's into another ditch like Bush, give me a President who isn't ready to lead on day one instead.

that sounds like a promo for the world wrestling federation.

I thought they were supposed to manage expectations *down* before the debate.

42!

['How many did you think there would be?']

Kind of like the Japanese in WWII. Every battle was a decisive battle until they lost everything.
