This post erroneously used the term "Malians" to refer to residents of Malawi when, in fact, the proper use of that term is to refer to Mali's citizens. Apologies for the error. Citizens of Malawi should be called "Malawians."

A ni chie, blog-tigi.
(As if a tubab like me has room to talk. :) )
If Yglesias starts posting corrections, where will it stop?
More seriously, this was an error that could give offense, so a correction was necessary. But as its own post?
Okay. But why not correct or update the erroneous post?
Also, people from Nigeria are called Nigerians, while people from Niger are called Nigeriens.
More? Anybody?
I'm still confused. Your correction above basically says that "Malians" refers to citizens and "Malawians" refers to citizens. What is the term for residents? (I suspect that it's Malawians) Please correct the correction!
I've wondered about the people in Aix-en-Provence. Are they Aix-en-Provincials?
Also, to stay in the same region of France, what about Nice? I think Niceans is taken.
Ivory Coast . . . Ivory Coasters? (It's actually Ivorians, I think)
People from Provence are Provençals. I'm not sure if there's a specific adjective for Aix. People from Nice are Niçois. ~~~~
thanks.
Residents of the Dominican Republic are called Dominicans, and residents of the Commonwealth of Dominica are called Dominicans... but the two words have the stress on different syllables.
Are you sure? The inhabitants of Somalia are Somalis not Somalians; those of Serbia, Serbs not Serbians. I think people from Malawi are Malawis.
BTW, people from Niger are Nigériens (with an accent).
PS: the old Michelin green guides, before they spoilt them with colour photographs and restaurant tips, used to tell you how the inhabitants of each town in the gazetteer were described. Nice -> niçois, Aix-en-Provence -> aixois. My favourites are: Pont-à-Mousson - moussipontins; Saint-Dié -> déodatiens (work it out).
