Brendan Nyhan reminds me that he looked at this gas-approval link in some detail back in 2006 and found that there wasn't much there.

Heads in the Sand
The gas-approval correlation is a good example of the dangers of multi-variate analysis (for example as used in The Bell Curve). Another case of garbage in, garbage out.
