The World's Greenest Places

Reader's Digest takes a look. New York City is the greenest of American cities, but it's not very impressive by world standards.

Oh, I thought that by "greenest," you meant "having the most greenery," and not "most expensive."

Interesting. Sacramento (which I live near) is amazingly attractive as cities go for one simple reason: they've had the sense to retain most of their trees. And I'm not fond of cities in general -- even San Francisco. (They've also left the Sacramento River untouched, but you don't see that from as much of the city.)

Just some personal experience: I have trouble breathing when I'm in New York City. especially summer.

I'm amazed Phoenix was even on the list. They have a good, all encompassing recycling program and quite a bit of the population is good about not planting grass (requires too much water). But when it comes to water conservation (low flow showers and toilets in public buildings), use of solar power and environmentally friendly use of space I find Phoenix to be atrocious.
