Giuliani, Robertson, and the Apocalypse

07 Nov 2007 10:34 am

Rudy Giuliani may not be an acceptable nominee to many leaders on the religious right, but old-and-super-crazy warhorse Pat Robertson is ready to endorse him. Marc Ambinder explains why:

Both Giuliani and Robertson share an apocalyptic worldview about the clash with [radical] Islam; for Robertson, it is religious and based in biblical prophecy. For Giuliani, it is secular -- but given his 9/11 experiences, just as personal.

Oh, good. Suddenly I'm pining for Daniel Pipes/

I can picture a shot of Rudy with an 'Endorsed by Pat Robertson' banner in a Democratic campaign ad.

Rudy strikes me as a red horse sort of guy.

So if 9/11 was God's punishment for our tolerance of gays, does that mean if President Rudy is supposed to prevent another 9/11, then he is protecting us from God?

My prediction that "Islamofascism" would be the most important issue for the Religious Right in this election is looking a lot better now. I think Rudy may have locked up the nomination today.

What the heck were Giuliani's 9/11 experiences that were supposedly personal and led to an apocalyptic world-view? The horror of watching his negligence and corrupt dealing with fire department radios get several hundred brave men killed? The shock of watching his emergency command center/love nest collapse due to his blunders? The emotional distress of turning a national tragedy into political soundbites?

I'm with rea. What's personal with Guiliani is his desire to pick a fight with the entirety of an appropriate out-group. 9/11 just helped.

Well, basically, yes. I know I'd take any excuse I could get not deal with the guilt about the emergency communication system, the mislocated command center, etc.

Thanks The Bobs, your comment gave me a good laugh just now. It also pretty much sums up the Orwellian style of Giuliani and Robertson.

Where better to go for permission to protect us from those who would wreak god's wrath upon us than from one whom god apparently tells about why his wrath was wreaked upon us?

Makes sense to me!

Now if he could just get god to give us some advanced warning the next time...maybe Robertson sould be head of Homeland Security.
