The really sad part is the personal problems he's apparently experiencing at the same time (scroll to the end of this post):
time to start following college ball. can you muster any amakermania?
Can Joe Gibbs play basketball?
Hoo boy, that's a shame. But look at the bright side: 1) More blogging time for Zero & 2) now you really get to see what DeShawn Stevenson, Brendan Haywood, and Andray Blatche are made of, & 3) we'll see if Caron Butler can take that extra step to becoming a true star in the league. And hey, if Antonio Daniels keeps playing like he did tonight (14 pt, 8 reb, 6 ast, 4 stl) and if the aforementioned are able to step it up a bit, the Wiz could easily be in playoff contention in the weak-sister East when Nacho comes back. Not top-five in the conference, not this year, but not far from eighth either.
"Not top-five in the conference, not this year, but not far from eighth either."
Washington/Baltimore area fans seem to be more delusional about their teams than any other fan base in the country.
The Wizards suck. The Redskins are horrible. I won't even mention the Nationals. The Orioles are a complete disgrace. The Ravens are dog vomit and Ray Lewis is two years past being washed up.
Sure, I'm riding high as a Massachusetts sports fan, but when the Celtics have sucked over most of the past decade I've never pretended they didn't. No one here ever begged Red Auerbach to come back and coach, either, which is what you guys did with Geriatric Joe Gibbs.
Your teams suck out loud. Admit it. Demand changes.
Daniel Snyder is a pissant and I pity you for having to pretend he might outgrow it. He never will.
Moe, what makes you think DC-area fans haven't noticed that the Redskins suck? That would really be hard to miss.
The Nationals, well, they're rebuilding, which is different from the long-term suckitude of the Skins. The Orioles? Who are they again? Oh right, the team whose disgrace we used to care about until we got our own baseball team.
The Wizards: No. They don't, actually, suck. Washington fans know good and well what a bad NBA team looks like, and the Arenas years look completely different from the 80s and 90s. It's not crazy to think the Wizards could still make the playoffs this year, and could make some noise if Gil comes back healthy. Not as exciting as the year the Celtics are starting to have, granted, but we can't all be spoiled New Englanders.
Antonio Daniels is a nice player who has had a quietly productive career after a poor start in Vancouver. So losing Arenas may or may not completely cripple the Wizards' season. But it is still a terrible thing for the league as Zero is one of the guys who draws interest to the game. This is simply a sad day for the league.
"The Wizards suck. The Redskins are horrible."
They're 6-5(currently in the playoffs) and 5-5.
Grow up, nobody is seriously suggesting either team is going to win a championship.
Also Baltimore and DC fans don't really care about each city's respective teams so it doesn't make any sense to lump them together.
The Wiz are screwed.
Dang, Gilbert!
That's too darn bad. For Wiz fans. And for NBA fans.
Gilbert is the man, it won't be the same without him playing.
But at least he'll still be blogging?
If anyone didn't bother to follow that link above to Gil's blog, you missed out.
Gil writing about his girlfriend is just great/sad stuff.
Gil keeps it real. Realer than any other athlete today.
Dang, Gil!
Re MoeLarryAndJesus
1. The Deadskins are currently 5-5 and have a decent shot at making the playoffs. Given the weakness of the NFC, a 9-7 record could well be sufficient and possibly even an 8-8 record. That's because they have defeated 2 of the teams currently contending with them, Arizona and Detroit, giving them a tie breaker against those two teams.
2. The Nationals actually did much better last year then many predicted. Most "experts" expected them to lose over 100 games and possibly even vie with the 1961 Mets as the worst team in the hostory of baseball. They lost, if I am not much mistaken 89 games.
3. Given the weakness of the Eastern Conference of the NBA, les boulez have a decent shot at making the playoffs.
Therefore, it is a considerably overstatement to say that Washington teams suck. They are merely mediocre.
Fearless prediction: The Wizards will do better than expected (not necessarily good) with Arenas out, because Haywood/Blatche will be playing 40+ minutes a game at center that would have gone to Songaila, Jamison and Booth last year.
As a result, you will see a lot of people saying that Arenas was actually hurting the team because he was selfish on offense, doesn't "make his teammates better", etc.
I expect Bill Simmons to be leading the charge.

You know what is sad? I thought how heartbroken you must have been when you read that. The Wizards fanboy you are. ;-)
