I Know Myself Well

26 Dec 2007 05:17 pm

I just realized that Google Reader has a "recommendations" function whereby Google makes suggests of new feeds "generated by comparing your interests with the feeds of users similar to you." Their number one recommendation is . . . my blog. Basically, I have the reading habits typical of someone who would read my blog. Which makes sense, of course, but still seems a bit odd.

That's lucky. Imagine if you got, say, Michelle Malkin.

The system works!

Basically, I have the reading habits typical of someone who would read my blog.

As clear a sign of liberal fascism as there is, from Mussolini to Matthew...

Perhaps Matt should have written "Google makes suggestions..."

I read this blog all the time. I just can't believe how sloppy Matt is with his words. Frankly, it's a constant source of aggravation, and if I ever stop reading Matt, this will be the reason.

The Atlantic needs to build a filter to correct his posts after he hits the post button and before they show up on the screen.

By not containing advertising, doesn't Google Reader threaten the financial foundation of blogging as a profession?

Apparently, you come highly self-recommended :)

I love the republican trolls - especially when they throw the word facism around. Is it a self-fulfilling prophecy for them?

It is amazing how every liberal blog seems to have these "concern" trolls or the overt hostile "liberals are scum" trolls. They have little useful to say - but enjoy promoting controversy - or offering half-baked arguments to "show" their superiority (complete with poor grammer, faulty reasoning (Clinton did it!) and ad hominem attacks). My personal favorite are the trolls that claim the free market will cure health care (sure, people who can't get or pay for insurance will surely benefit from the free market - not to mention the people who already have health insurance - but the claims are denied continually).

It's a pity Borges is no longer around. He could do a wonderful 2 or 3 pages on this phenomenon.

Gene wins the thread. But "Yglesias and I" doesn't have the same verve....

If you read the books that Google recommends, and go on to read the further books recommended on the basis of those books ... isn't Google shaping who you are?

I predict that eventually all the recommendations for everyone would converge at the level of The Da Vinci Code and The Lovely Bones.

If I ever stop reading Matt, it will be because of all the whiny comments about his typos and grammar mistakes.

I smell a contest.

If I ever stop reading Matt, it will be because they've started censoring the tubes.

Based on all the typos, there's no guarantee you do read your blog.

I kid -- although it's clear that you don't read your feed if Google has to recommend it to you.

Andy Kindler used to have a bit about the demographics of his biggest fans: "Men, my age, who are me."

I just noticed that Marginal Revolution has well over 76,000 subscribers on Google Reader.

that's well over any other blog i've seen (in contrast, Andrew Sullivan, who is of course a successful blogger, only has 4,400 subscribers. Daily Kos has 9,500.)

Marginal Revolution has to be the most influential/popular blog out there.
