Lemons into Missile Defense

22 Dec 2007 01:11 pm

Obviously, a lot of neocon types are down in the dumps about the NIE on Iran. Not to worry, though, AEI's Charlie Szrom, writing for The Weekly Standard and citing the time-honored conservative precept that "everything strengthens the case for missile defense boondoggles" explains that the report strengthens the case for missile defense boondoggles. And, indeed, all indications are that the system would work better against non-existent Iranian nuclear missiles than against the real kind, so in that sense Szrom makes a strong case.

It's not strictly relevant, but Matt reminds me of a snippet I remember from an old, old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon: an Air Force officer bursts into the general's office and breathlessly announces,

"Sir! Sir! Our anti-anti-missile-missile just shot itself down!"

A better missile defense system would be to fire neocons into the upper atmosphere and get them to open their mouths. The vacuum would suck in ICBMs, spy satellites and all manner of space junk.

How in hell do you expect Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Orbital Services, Northrup Grumman and Teledyne to defend their profits against budget cuts and shifts in budget priorities without National Missile Defense?

Well we could go to Mars like Bush suggested a few years ago. What ever happened to that?

Well, I've always thought this Missile Defense nonsense was gigantic waste of money, but if all the neocons now decide to switch from "Let's Attack Iran" mode to "Let's Defend Against Venusians" mode, I'll be very happy...

That Ron Paul sure is a lightning rod. He's partially responsible for the following match-up:

Thrilla in Vanilla: Klein vs. Greenwald
.

Obviously, we should just get one of those Simpsons movie bubble domes: that way, they could keep the immigrants out, the dissidents in, protect from missiles, ignore global warming, *and* profitably project advertisements all over the center of the bubble. Problem solved!

El Cid, that was very funny.

By that logic, port security is a boondoggle. How much will it cost to inspect every container, as John Edwards says we should?

Any one defense is a Maginot Line, no matter how effective that defense. Better to have several unreliable systems than one airtight one that anyone with half a brain can go right around, such as port security.

I think Derrick Z. Jackson of the Boston Globe said it best a few years ago that after decades of tests, we are closer to being able to clone a Klingon than having an effective missile defense.

Derrick Z Jackson is so ignorant about military technology I doubt he knows the difference between a SAM-3A and an obelisk at a MLK memorial.

The problem with critics, especially Lefty journalists with just degrees in journalism like Jackson, is they don't understand the improvement pace in capability, which comes close to matching the computing ability "Moore's Law". They see successful AMB test after test, and refuse to acknowledge reality. Just as critics of heavier than air flight said it wouldn't work, then that test failures were too much, then that it would never be useful because railroads and ships could haul vastly more cargo over longer distances..

Mostly they hate that they were wrong. About the nuclear freeze. About Star Wars breaking the back of the Soviets. About nuclear power being evil and forbidden to any country concerned about CO2 and global warming. About our certain defeat in Iraq. Now, NMD. (Which, as Derrick Z Jackson looks for tail fins on the MLK obelisk, is a technology that also happens to work quite well on theater missiles, counter artillery, and all aircraft threats)

Given the unstable, dangerous regimes of Iran, Pakistan, the NORKs - the public approves of the shield as a useful piece of multilayer security and defense for America. Japan, Australia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, and most of Europe are all onboard now and working with us to develop and field a 4-5 tier defense system against any nations with nuke tipped or biowar, nerve gas missilery - but China and Russia who just have too many missiles&warheads to stop - they can overwhelm our modest-sized system with pure brute force .

What is the superseding defense against Zion-Fascism? We marginalize that threat- there'll be no others.

You know, whether it's a righty blog, lefty blog, or center blog, there will always be at least one out of 100 posts that blame the JEws for all the problems in the world.

Look, even if we accept the premise that Zionism causes a lot of conflict, can you seriously say with a straight face that if we neutralized Zionism there would be NO threats? Is Kim Jong Il crazy because of Zionism? Is the China-Taiwan problem a Zionism problem? Was the war in the Balkans that we got involved in in the 90s because of Zionism? Even in the Middle East, are ARab vs. Arab wars over Zionism?

They see successful AMB test after test, and refuse to acknowledge reality.

Chris, you have a future as a scab writer for Leno or Stewart. Funnier words have never been written.

When was there a succesfull ABM test? Never, that's when. Even when they cheat, it doesn't work.

Adam Herman, ignore both of the posters above you. They are both pretty much self-admitted neo-Nazis. You don't engage neo-Nazis because you can't engage someone that is certifiably insane.
