Missing the Point

22 Dec 2007 09:09 am

Rihanna's "Umbrella" is, it seems to me, a very sweet -- almost treacly -- song: "When the sun shines / We'll shine together / Told you I'll be here forever / Said I'll always be your friend / Took an oath / I'mma stick it out 'till the end." The video, not so much:

Just saying.

"They lived at the bottom of a treacle well!"

At first I thought it was a Nike add for sneakers?

my favorite aspect of the video is that they use a legs double for Rihanna for the dance shots where the dancer is "on point" as they say in ballet.

Posh Spice called, she wants her old getup back for the new tour.

Yeah, and "Shut Up and Drive" is merely about an automobile.

So that's the teh lyk omg song of 2007?

Um, so what's wrong with that?

Is it me or did they seem to rip off the artwork from Sole's CD "Skin Deep" (itself a ripoff of a Playboy shoot)?

Damn, I was going to say didn't think there were too many pop singers who can stand on point.

She looks rather uncomfortable and a bit wooden in the video.

I liked the Hillary-Obama version personally...

I don't get he "treacly" part. Matthew seems to me to be taking the lyrics too literally.

And, in any event, a song with that base line can't be treacly sweet, regardless of the lyrics.

The mute-button hit of the year

It's between that and this.

I like when Yglesias does an obliquely libidinous post.

Not so treacly, no. But amazingly awesome, yes.

Felt a bit wooden watching this one....

It's no Pon de Replay, but not bad. I still like the song S.O.S. where she samples Tainted Love.

...sheez hawt!!!....

The song's a bit of a Dolores O'Riordan ripoff, musically.

At least she's not trying to Upgrade us...
