Top Ten Lists

19 Dec 2007 01:46 pm

I'm seeing more-and-more blog posts wherein people post their ten favorite albums / songs / movies / whatever of the year, but the year's not done yet. This blog will be full of lists from December 26-31 but nothing until then.

The year doesn't end December 26th either. Why not wait until January 1st (or 2nd if you're too hung over)?

Top 10 reasons people post top 10 lists before the year end...Go!

Best Post of 2007.

Sir, I admire your principles. Of course I will assume your lists will suck, but doggonit at least you have something.

Can we get a Top Ten Liberal Fascists of '07 list?

"Hitler: 'Man of the Left'" has a permanent spot, so maybe you should just do a Top Nine list.

Ummmm....

The year won't be done yet from December 26-31 either, y'know.

I demand no top ten lists until January 1st.

Without that figleaf of intellectual consistency, I will be forced to pre-emptively declare this the 7th worst blog post of 2007.

And besides, we're all going to need distractions on the first three days of the year as we wait for the corn people to weigh in with their deep thoughts.

Well, critics have probably already seen all of the movies coming out, and there really aren't new books, TV shows, etc. being released now. On the other hand, I can't really give my top 10 movies of 2007 until sometime in February.

The really stupid thing is the NFL announcing the Pro Bowl winners with 2 games left to go.

how about Top 10 Stupidest Quotes from Jonah's new book?

Clearly, we have reached the natural endpoint of the Feiler Faster Thesis , where we can now respond to events before they even happen. Matthew, you ignore the onrushing future at the peril of your very relevancy!

I will be releasing my 'Favorite Movies of 2009' list in about 2 weeks, if anyone cares.

In defense of the pre-emptive listers, there aren't many more albums yet to be released this year.

Eh, not really. Baseball and basketball do it halfway through the season. It is what it is.

It is worth noting that back in the slower-moving pre-internet days (1999), print magazines would often assemble their "Year-End Best Of" issues in August (an otherwise-slow month), with the intent of making only whatever adjustments were necessary before the magazine actually went to press at year's end.

What productive member of society has time to keep up with movies/albums/games in real time? I didn't have a firm grasp on 2006's best until this May.

Any movie list that isn't topped by "Rescue Dawn" should be reconsidered. (Just getting that out of the way early.)

Is Matt going to have a "Top Ten Stupidest Posts I Made This Year?"

This post he just made is number 10.

Now go back nine days...

I own an independent record label. Last week I was talking with a music writer about an album we're releasing in early spring next year. He told me the release time was fortuitous as he could put the album in question on best of the year list that was due in to a magazine in May.
