If you haven't seen them yet, scroll down a bit on this Amazon page and watch the videos. Great stuff. The writers deserve royalties, though.

Many, many thanks Matt. Loved the Prop Joe one even more than Omar. Prop Joe would have made one hell of a politician.
The Boondocks is the best show in the history of television.
It's not, but it does have the best theme music since Playmakers.
"Shoals disagrees"
I agree with Shoals. I found the Prop Joe prequel to ring especially false.
The L'il Omar one was charming enough to suspend my objections, though.
Shoals and co. are overthinking it. These aren't meant to be deeply entwined parts of the narrative...they're just glimpses. Anecdotes that give you clues and ideas about where these characters came from. Plus, more simply, it's just about whetting our appetites for the show and giving us something to tide us over.
Li'l Omar was a bit too much, but then again, Omar himself is something of an over-the-top character, a romantic fiction who is deliberately at odds with the stark reality of the show. (I think Shoals said something similar in much more depth last year.) So his "origin" shouldn't be anything less.
And really, anyone who thinks Bunk and McNulty's first meeting wouldn't end up in a drunken stupor not only doesn't know the show, but is a terrorist and hates freedom. Okay, maybe not.
I thought the Omar prequel was awful... doesn't boiling down the essence of a character into a simplistic two minute narrative go against everything 'The Wire' stands for?

The Young Omar prequel is the only one I found particularly compelling.

And tangentially, given your love for comix and your love for The Wire, why do you show no love for The Boondocks, Matthew? It should be right up your alley.
The Boondocks is the best show in the history of television.
